Far-Left Congresswoman Defies Constituents In Support Of Migrant Shelter

Residents of the Bronx are intensifying their opposition to a planned 2,200-bed, male-only migrant shelter set to open in the South Bronx. Despite strong backing from local political leaders like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Bronx residents and critics are voicing their concerns over the impact of the facility on their community. The heated debate reflects the growing tensions between local communities, city officials, and the ongoing migrant crisis in New York City.

The proposed shelter is part of New York City’s strategy to consolidate its migrant housing system, shutting down 46 smaller sites in favor of a larger, centralized facility. The city claims that the shelter is intended to reduce the total number of migrant housing beds by roughly 10,000, offering a more efficient solution. However, many Bronx residents and local leaders feel that their neighborhood is being unfairly burdened by the influx of asylum seekers.

Christopher Reid, chairman of the New York Young Republican Club’s Bronx Caucus, has been an outspoken critic of the shelter. Speaking on Fox & Friends, Reid argued that the majority of Bronx residents are against the shelter’s construction. “To AOC, I would say, talk to your constituents,” Reid said. “I’ve been through these neighborhoods… Nobody wants it there.” His comments reflect widespread unease over the shelter’s location, which is viewed by many as an imposition on a community already facing challenges related to crime and limited resources.

Protests outside the future shelter site earlier this month further emphasized the opposition. Demonstrators, many of them local residents, held signs that read “The Bronx is MAGA” and “The Bronx Says NO.” The protestors have expressed concerns about increased crime, the strain on local resources, and the lack of community input in the decision-making process. They argue that the South Bronx is being treated as a “migrant dumping ground,” a sentiment echoed by Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.), who represents the borough.

While city officials, including Ocasio-Cortez, maintain that the shelter is a temporary measure designed to help manage the migrant population, many Bronx residents remain skeptical. In response to criticism, city officials have emphasized that security measures will be in place at the shelter. However, this has done little to assuage concerns about the potential long-term effects on the community.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, whose district includes the shelter site, has been a vocal proponent of New York City’s efforts to provide sanctuary to “asylum seekers” though many of them are suspected to be economic migrants. She has actively supported policies to protect illegal immigrants, including hosting a “Know Your Rights” webinar on her Facebook page for them. The webinar, which focused on migrants’ rights when approached by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), included advice for attendees to ask ICE officials, “Am I free to go? Am I being detained?” and to leave if the answer was no.

The controversy over the migrant shelter is part of a larger political shift in the Bronx, where some are questioning the priorities of local politicians like Ocasio-Cortez. In the 2024 election, former President Donald Trump saw a significant increase in support in New York City, particularly in the Bronx and Queens, where his backing grew by 22% compared to 2020, according to CBS News data. Reid believes this shift in support reflects a growing dissatisfaction with the policies of progressive leaders like Ocasio-Cortez.

The people of the Bronx are obviously not very intelligent if they keep electing an airhead like AOC to represent them.

    ahem tonto

To the uninformed and apparently uncaring constituents of the communist idiot AOC, you must either recall her or suffer whatever consequences her actions have on the broader U.S. population. She is a menace to our republic, our culture and all of our personal freedoms. Fire and prosecute her for the prevarications she continuously foments and proffers.

If the need is “temporary”, why are they doing this consolidation at all? It sounds expensive and they have a solution right now. I suspect by temporary they mean like the next 50 to 100 years!
