Will Hurd, a former congressman from Texas, has decided to suspend his presidential campaign.
An outspoken critic of former President Trump, Hurd relentlessly criticized the GOP front-runner despite his magnetic hold on the Republican Party.
In a lengthy statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the retired CIA clandestine officer-turned-politician announced the end of his campaign:
“While I appreciate all the time and energy our supporters have given, it is important to recognize the realities of the political landscape and the need to consolidate our party around one person to defeat both Donald Trump and President Biden,” Hurd wrote. “I urge donors, voters, and other candidates to unite around an alternative candidate to Trump. Otherwise, we will repeat the same errors as in 2016. If the Republican Party nominates Donald Trump or the various personalities jockeying to imitate his divisive, crass behavior, we will lose, he added.
Hurd then endorsed former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley.
Mediaite noted Trump's response, which included mocking Hurd for failing to make a dent in his lead and choosing to endorse Haley, calling her “Birdbrain” in a post on Truth Social:

Will Hurd, the failed former Congressman from the great State of Texas, who decided not to run for Congress again because he did an ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE JOB (ZERO Personality!), and couldn't win, has just now decided to drop out of the 2024 Presidential Campaign where he, likewise, drew “flies!” He is a nasty and jealous guy, who truly doesn't have what it takes. Luckily for him, he couldn't make the Debate Stage, but went out with a bang – He endorsed Birdbrain!

Hurd's decision to drop out came after the Texas Republican failed to meet the criteria needed to qualify for the first and second GOP debates. Hurd has also largely been trailing his 2024 rivals in national and local polling.
Hurd was among a small number of anti-Trump critics running in the Republican presidential primary. Hurd and former Govs. Asa Hutchinson (Ark.) and Chris Christie (N.J.) have all been critical of the former president and trail other Republican rivals like Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Though Christie has performed better in New Hampshire, the polling has underscored the reality that anti-Trump messaging has not resonated with the GOP electorate at large.
Hurd's decision also underscores how the race is already being viewed by some Republicans and donors as a two-person race between Haley and DeSantis to become the chief rival to former President Trump, who holds a comfortable lead in national and local polling over all of his rivals.

Some republican better hang in there because if the GOP is stupid enough to make Trump their candidate then the democrats are sure winners, no matter who they nominate. All those big poll numbers they claim for Trump is very likely just the MAGA people responding, because non-republicans are not going to vote for him, and those against him far outnumber the MAGA people.The hate for Trump is very wide and deep across this country so he will never win a general election again, for any office, no matter what the polls claim.
