Former Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan has been formally expelled from the Georgia Republican Party. The expulsion follows his outspoken criticism of President-elect Donald Trump throughout the 2024 election cycle, as well as his endorsement and campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris over Trump in the presidential race.
On January 6, the Georgia Republican Party’s state executive committee voted unanimously to oust Duncan, citing a series of actions and public statements that the committee deemed as a betrayal of the party’s core values. The resolution accused Duncan of breaking his oath to the Republican Party and claimed he “undermined and sabotaged” GOP candidates.
In a sharply-worded resolution, the Georgia GOP described Duncan’s tenure as Lieutenant Governor from 2019 to 2023 as “marred by embarrassment and scandal.” The party argued that Duncan had “forfeited any claim to being even a nominal Republican.”
Duncan was once considered a rising star within the Georgia Republican Party. He served as the state’s Lieutenant Governor from 2019 until 2023 and had a prior stint in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017. Throughout his early career, Duncan was seen as a moderate Republican with the potential to play a major role in the state’s political future.
In December 2020, Duncan joined Governor Brian Kemp in rejecting Trump’s demands to convene a special session of the Georgia Assembly to appoint new electors, a move that would have challenged Joe Biden’s certified victory in the state.
Duncan’s political future took another dramatic turn when he publicly revealed that he did not vote for either candidate, Herschel Walker or Raphael Warnock, in the 2022 Georgia Senate race. His refusal to support Walker, who was Trump’s hand-picked candidate, only deepened the rift between him and the state GOP.
In a May 2024 op-ed for Georgia’s largest newspaper, Duncan declared that Trump had disqualified himself from the presidency “through his conduct and his character.” He accused Trump of fueling the events of January 6, 2021, and undermining American democracy.
Later that summer, Duncan took his opposition to Trump even further, delivering a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. There, he urged Republicans to join him in voting for Harris, calling it a patriotic act rather than partisan allegiance. “Let me be clear to my Republican friends at home watching: If you vote for Kamala Harris in 2024, you’re not a Democrat, you’re a patriot,” Duncan declared to a packed convention hall.
Duncan also described the modern Republican Party as a “cult worshipping a felonist thug,” referring to Trump, setting the stage for his eventual expulsion.
On January 6, 2025, the Georgia Republican Party officially expelled Duncan, banning him from qualifying as a candidate for any future office under the GOP banner. In addition to the expulsion, Duncan’s previous nominations as the Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor and the Georgia House were “expunged,” effectively nullifying his political career with the state GOP.
The resolution also demanded that Duncan cease referring to himself as a “Republican” and stop using the label for personal gain. The party banned him from all GOP events and properties, making it clear that his future within the state party was over.
