As a partial government shutdown looms, several House Republicans have signaled plans to head home for the holidays on Saturday, complicating the prospects of a swift resolution if new spending isn’t approved by midnight Friday. The political maneuvering from Speaker of the House Mike Johnson’s office all the way to conservative activists on X highlights the challenges of reaching a consensus under tight deadlines and increasing tensions.
Speaker Johnson Pushes “Plan C” to Avert Shutdown
Speaker Johnson announced Friday that GOP negotiators have crafted a tentative agreement—dubbed “Plan C”—aimed at preventing a shutdown. The proposed measure is expected to go to a vote later today, marking a critical test for House Republicans after a string of legislative setbacks.
Thursday night’s revised continuing resolution bill failed to secure passage in the House, with 174 votes in favor and 235 against—including 38 dissenting Republicans. The measure fell far short of the two-thirds majority required for fast-track approval.
In a bid to address the situation, Johnson has two options to secure short-term government funding.
Politico explains:
Speaker Mike Johnson laid out two potential paths to avert a government shutdown in a closed-door meeting with the House GOP Friday morning, according to a slide presented in the closed-door House GOP conference and shared with POLITICO.
There’s less than 12 hours left before a shutdown deadline.
Option one was moving a stopgap bill that funds the government through March that largely matches the package endorsed by Donald Trump that failed in the House on Thursday evening, except it wouldn’t include raising the debt limit. Johnson said that package would pass via suspension, meaning it would need a two-thirds majority to pass and therefore a lot of Democratic votes. It would include a one-year extension of the farm bill and $110 billion in disaster aid.
The second plan he laid out would involve three separate votes: one a stopgap funding bill into March, another on money for natural disasters and a third on aid for farmers. Johnson would try to pass that plan through the Rules Committee, meaning it would have to clear a couple of tough hurdles before a simple majority passage vote.
No decision has been announced regarding which path he will take.
Partisan Rancor Escalates Amid Shutdown Talks
While Republicans work to shore up internal support for their funding strategy, Democrats have ramped up efforts to exploit divisions within the GOP.
Notably, Democratic leaders have launched a coordinated campaign to strain ties between Elon Musk and President-elect Trump. By repeatedly referring to Musk as “President Musk” in public remarks, they hope to goad Trump—whose alliance with Musk is stronger than ever.
The deliberate rhetoric, amplified by media allies, reflects a broader strategy to fracture the recently victorious Republican Party.

Uncertainty Ahead as Lawmakers Face Deadline
The path forward remains unclear, with key factions in both parties staking out divergent positions on spending priorities and political messaging. Should a shutdown occur, it could further complicate negotiations when lawmakers return after the holidays.
For now, all eyes are on Speaker Johnson and House Republicans as they navigate one of the most consequential votes of the year.

Let it shut down. It has happened before, we’ll get over it! Your fear-mongering is pathetic.
SHut it down morons.
Shut it down. It is past time the Republicans called the Democrats bluff. I’m a senior citizen and dependent on SSI. I will sacrifice just to see this finally happen. The time for last minute deal making is long past. I finally heard someone saying what I have asked for years today. Who writes these bills? Name the names. Every item should have a sponsor’s signature of who proposed it so the public knows if their legislator is working for them or some non-elected lobbyist or corporation. Congress needs to do their job. It is why they were elected.
Everyone please note how the Dems are obstructing the budget process purely to make the Republicans look bad at their failure. Dems have no credibility, moral code, or a code of ethics.
THE POLITICIANS ,NO MATTER WHICH PARTY ,WILL NOT GIVE UP THEIR LUCRATIVE VACATION TIME AS THEY ONLY WORK 5 MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR AND WILL NOT SACRIFICE 1 DAY OF IT. NO WONDER THEY FIGHT LIKE HELL, LIE ,STEAL CHEAT AND DO ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED .TO HELL WITH THE CITIZENS THAT VOTED FOR THEM AS LONG AS THEIR “I GOT MINE” ATTITUDE LIVES ON. WHAT HAPPENED TO MORALS INTEGRITY, HONESTY, CARING FOR OTHERS ,WHERE HAS IT GONE?
I am SO tired of the so called ‘freedom caucus’ who rather than talk about the disagreement and maybe have a conversation, they stomp their feet and scream at reporters to get clicks. I tried to listen to one of them with Ingrahm last night and all I could hear was it wasn’t what ‘they’ wanted. I shut it off, Ingrahm was just as bad. But by all means if they want to go home for Christmas without working together to keep the gov open, by all means, but I as an American voter want the names of these people who are unwilling to do what WE want.
