Kamala Harris Was Reportedly Completely Shocked By Election Loss

In the aftermath of her stunning 2024 loss to Donald Trump, former Vice President Kamala Harris was reportedly blindsided — having “bought the hype” that her campaign was on track for victory. According to FIGHT: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House, a new book by journalists Amie Parnes and Jonathan Allen, Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz were left speechless on election night, unable to believe the outcome as it unfolded.

“She was completely shocked, and Tim Walz was shocked,” Parnes revealed during a recent episode of the Somebody’s Gotta Win podcast. The pair reportedly sat stunned in their hotel room as staff attempted to explain the numbers. Harris, in disbelief, asked, “Are you sure? Should we do a recount?”

The book paints a picture of a campaign riddled with misplaced confidence and internal miscommunication. Senior campaign officials projected optimism, citing strong fundraising, crowd enthusiasm, and “boots on the ground” operations. Harris, the authors claim, bought into this narrative — a decision that left her and her team blindsided on election night.

In the weeks following the loss, Harris reportedly told friends that she believed she would have beaten Trump if she’d had more time to campaign — or if Joe Biden had dropped out of the race earlier. Biden had initially signaled a reelection bid before stepping aside late in the race, on July 21, which Harris felt hamstrung her chances.

“She could have won, she told friends, if only the election was later in the calendar — or she got in earlier,” the authors write. “In other words, Joe Biden was to blame.”

Blaming President Biden’s late withdrawal from the race, however, overlooks several glaring issues within Kamala Harris’ own campaign. Chief among them was her delayed rollout of a clear policy platform — with her campaign website lacking any explanation of her positions for over a month after she officially entered the race. Additionally, Harris largely avoided media engagement in the crucial early weeks of her campaign, missing key opportunities to define herself before opponents and outside narratives filled in the blanks. These self-inflicted wounds compounded the perception that her candidacy lacked both direction and conviction — a perception that many believe played a far greater role in her defeat than the timing of Biden’s exit.

Not everyone in Harris’ circle agreed with her analysis. One friend called the idea “f—ing bonkers,” insisting that a shorter campaign was actually a blessing, not a curse. A campaign adviser put it more bluntly: “We needed more substance… and she did not have more substance.”

The book also reveals deep division within the Democratic Party as Biden stepped aside. Former President Barack Obama was reportedly hesitant to endorse Harris, lacking confidence in her ability to defeat Trump. According to Allen, Obama worked behind the scenes to try to open the door to other contenders, hoping for a mini-primary or open convention.

The revelations underscore what many political analysts have observed since the election: a fractured Democratic Party, internal misjudgments, and a candidacy that failed to resonate broadly despite historic fundraising and media attention.

“She believed her party’s hype” ? She must not have been paying attention, but being part of it, should have fully understood the type of folks she was depending on.
