Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) clinched victory in the Republican primary for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, defying predictions that her congressional career was at an end following Rep. Ken Buck’s (R-Colo.) expedited retirement.
Boebert’s Path to Victory
Boebert’s win was a remarkable feat against multiple competitors, defying expectations that Buck’s resignation would derail her political trajectory. The Colorado Republican, who represents the western 3rd Congressional District, sought reelection after narrowly edging out Democrat Adam Frisch by a mere few hundred votes in 2022.
Observers initially believed that Buck’s resignation and the ensuing special election would spell the end for Boebert. Buck’s exit seemed strategically timed to force Boebert into a challenging decision: focus on a last-minute special election or rally primary voters weary of her recent media controversies.
If another Republican won the special election, a distinct possibility in a crowded primary, they would be running as the incumbent with all the strategic advantages accompanying that position.
Boebert decided not to participate in the special election to avoid resigning from her current 3rd District seat, which would have triggered a special election to complete her term.
However, Colorado Republicans, once led by Buck as the state party chairman, had different plans. They chose former Parker Mayor Greg Lopez to run as the GOP candidate in the special election.
Lopez was one of only two GOP candidates who had vowed not to run for reelection in November, or in Tuesday’s primary, effectively serving as a placeholder for Boebert.
Boebert is now expected to face Democratic nominee Trisha Calvarese in November. Given Donald Trump’s 19-point victory in this district in 2020, Boebert remains the favorite.
AIPAC-Backed Challenger Topples Jamaal Bowman
Meanwhile, in New York, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), known for his progressive stances and an embarrassing incident involving a fire alarm during a government funding bill debate, lost his primary. A moderate Democrat, supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), triumphed over Bowman in a district near New York City. Bowman’s defeat marks a significant blow to the “Squad,” a group of far-left lawmakers first elected in 2018.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer, a pro-Israel Democrat, emerged victorious, with the New York Republican Party celebrating the first significant defeat of a “Squad” member.
Bowman’s heavy defeat highlights the division within the Democratic Party regarding the war in Gaza.
