Former CNN senior media reporter Oliver Darcy has shed new light on the sudden departure of Neil Cavuto from Fox News, suggesting that Cavuto’s exit was not as voluntary as it may have seemed. According to Darcy, Cavuto’s long-running program no longer aligned with Fox’s increasingly MAGA-friendly lineup.
Cavuto, one of the network’s original anchors, announced last Thursday that he had declined to renew his contract. Initial reports from Mediaite suggested that Cavuto’s departure was amicable, with sources claiming the network had hoped to retain him. Fox News itself issued a glowing statement praising Cavuto’s nearly three decades with the company:
“Neil Cavuto’s illustrious career has been a master class in journalism, and we’re extremely proud of his incredible 28-year run with FOX News Media. His programs have defined business news and set the standard for the entire industry. We wish him a heartfelt farewell and all the best on his next chapter.”
Despite the warm words, Darcy revealed a different narrative. Writing on his website Status, Darcy described Cavuto’s program as a “wormhole to another time”—a throwback to an era before Donald Trump’s rise reshaped both the Republican Party and right-wing media:
On Thursday afternoon, Neil Cavuto took his spot behind the Fox News anchor desk for a final time. Speaking to viewers from the network’s Manhattan headquarters on the Avenue of the Americas, the business news anchor signed off the air after a remarkable 28-year run at the Rupert Murdoch-owned enterprise.
“This is my final show,” Cavuto told viewers. “I’m leaving Fox.”
Cavuto did not delve into the details behind his decision. He stressed he is “not leaving journalism,” thanked his bosses at Fox News (though none by name), and mentioned that the network “offered a very generous opportunity” for him to stay, but that for some reason he opted to decline it.
“Donald Trump not only remade the Republican Party in his own image, but he also remade the right-wing media landscape in it too,” Darcy wrote. “Fox News’ 2024 lineup is a reflection of that.”
Darcy also claimed that Cavuto’s exit may have been influenced by financial considerations. Staying on air would have likely required Cavuto to accept a pay cut, even though Fox News continues to dominate cable news ratings and the key 25–54 advertising demographic.
Cavuto’s departure underscores the shifting priorities within Fox News as it pivots toward a more overtly Trump-aligned editorial stance, leaving little room for voices that don’t fit the mold.
