A former Obama strategist has given a shoutout to a current Midwestern governor for his “aggressive campaign” to join the ticket of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

David Axelrod, the chief strategist for former President Obama’s presidential campaigns, praised Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in a post on social media as reports indicate that Walz is on Harris’ shortlist to be her vice president.

“Whether he makes it or not, there’s no doubt MN Gov. @Tim_Walz is running the most aggressive campaign for VP in the field,” Axelrod posted along with a glowing Politico report detailing Walz’s “Midwest grit.”

Walz recently made media headlines for branding former President Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, as “just weird” during an MSNBC interview last week.

While much of the veepstakes conversation has centered on four names – Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper – Walz is included on the broader list along with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

However, earlier this week the Michigan Governor shut the lid on VP rumors.

During an appearance on MSNBC‘s Morning Joe, the Democrat reiterated her plan to finish her term as governor.

After introducing Whitmer and promoting her new book, host Jonathan Lemire noted that “You [Whitmer] are later today heading out on the campaign trail, heading to Pennsylvania — obviously a battleground state. You have been mentioned as a possible running mate for Vice President Harris.”

“So let’s just start there. Has the campaign reached out to you about that possibility?” he asked.

“I have communicated with everyone, including the campaign, that I’ve made a commitment to serve out my term as governor in Michigan,” replied Whitmer. “I can be an excellent ally to a President Harris and I can be a great co-chair of the Harris campaign from my place as governor. So I am not a part of the vetting.”

Whitmer endorsed Harris for president last Monday, one day after President Biden suspended his reelection campaign and threw his support behind Harris.

“In Vice President Harris, Michigan voters have a presidential candidate they can count on to focus on lowering their costs, restoring their freedoms, bringing jobs and supply chains back home from overseas, and building an economy that works for working people,” said Whitmer. “She’s a former prosecutor, a champion for reproductive freedom, and I know that she’s got Michigan’s back.”

Gov. Andy Beshear also is reportedly effectively out of the running after being passed over for vetting materials in the process.
