Report: Jan. 6 Special Counsel Subpoenas Arizona Secretary Of State

-

Special counsel Jack Smith has reportedly issued a subpoena to the Secretary of State's office as part of his ongoing investigation into the Jan. 6th Capitol riot.

A spokesperson confirmed to The Hill that the secretary of state's office received two subpoenas, one for the previous administration and another for the current one.

The subpoenas sought information related to lawsuits brought by the campaign and the chair of the Arizona about alleged errors in the state's 2020 election results. President  won Arizona that year, flipping a longtime Republican stronghold.

While Smith has subpoenaed multiple Arizona lawmakers in connection with his probe he does not appear to have requested information from former Republican Gov. Doug Ducey.

The Washington Post reported over the weekend that former President Donald Trump made multiple calls to Ducey after the 2020 election to encourage the Arizona governor to “find” votes to overturn his narrow loss in the state, however, former Vice President Mike Pence refuted the claims.

Ducey reportedly told a donor about the calls earlier this year and expressed his surprise that Smith had not contacted him for the Jan. 6 probe.

Former Vice President Mike Pence acknowledged over the weekend that he called Ducey to discuss the election but said he doesn't recall “any pressure” from Trump to try and persuade the then-governor to overturn the results.

The former president made a similar call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger after the election.

Smith was appointed by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland last fall to oversee the Justice Department's investigations into Trump.
