Romney Makes Plea To GOP Mega-Donors: Narrow The Field To Beat Trump

-

hopes to sabotage any chance of clinching the GOP presidential nomination again.

The Republican's plan? Appeal to the party's donor class to pressure noncompetitive candidates to drop out to avoid Trump-plurality wins in potentially competitive caucuses and primaries. (RELATED: Top Trump Adviser Drops Vice President Suggestion And It's Wild)

It began Monday with an op-ed by the senator in The Journal.

The proposal has been meet with notable skepticism by the former president's allies and enemies:

Mediaite has more on the senator's appeal, starting with this week's opening salvo:

Romney began by noting that “a baker's dozen Republicans” are challenging Trump to be the GOP standard bearer in 2024 and it “is possible for any of them if the field narrows to a two-person race before Mr. Trump has the nomination sewn up.”

The 2012 Republican GOP nominee for president then argued, “Republican megadonors and influencers—large and small—are going to have to do something they didn't do in 2016: get candidates they support to agree to withdraw if and when their paths to the nomination are effectively closed.”

Romney even went so far as to offer a specific date for all but one non-Trump candidates to drop out of the race. “That decision day should be no later than, say, Feb. 26, the Monday following the contests in , New Hampshire, and South Carolina.”

The senator acknowledged incentives for long-shot presidential candidates to overstay their welcome. Thus making requests to drop out less appealing. (RELATED: Time To Sack Paternity Pete)

Especially for egocentric politicians:

Coming in behind first place may grease another run in four years or have market value of its own: Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum got paying gigs. And as former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu has observed, “It is fun running for president if you know you cannot win.”

  1. ANYONE who listens to Mitt BigMouth Romney is listening to a hugh loser. He needs to be recalled by Utah!

  2. Romney is a RINO pos. TRUMP is the one person who can turn this country around.
The atrocities in the legal system towards him male the message loud and clear.
Trump deserves to be the nominee. There is no excuse for the lack of support for him..or the trash talk that losers like Romney..Christie..Murkowski..
    Cheney..McConnell throw his way.
Trump has my support and the support of millions
of proud Republicans…and hopefully when he is reelected..the swamp will be drained..manyvof the rats coming from the Republican side.

  3. Romney should be removed from this country. He’s not a patriot, he’s an insignificant nuisance to our country!

  4. The leading ‘RINO’ in the GOP is Romney. He sets all precedents for Senators like Murkowski and others who do not belong in the party and McDaniel (holder of the purse) needs to confirm that. Unfortunately her relationship with Romney (as a relative, I understand) is not conducive to running a cohesive party. The GOP will always be handicapped in their quest for winning benefits for Conservatives and all freedom loving Americans until they take a concrete steps to support American values and the Constitution.

    • Right, Richard, I do not trust his niece Ronna either. She’s become wealthier since she became the GOP Chair.

  5. For a good Mormon, Romney sure is a HATER. Here’s the directive: Keep your eyes in your own worthless lane, until you can do something/anything better.
