In a confrontational meeting reported yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged President Biden to withdraw from the upcoming presidential race. Schumer’s appeal to the president was reportedly forceful.
The news was broken by Jonathan Karl of ABC News on Wednesday night. The latest development in the intra-party conflict comes amid concerns about President Biden’s mental health.
The Washington Times reports:
Mr. Schumer’s camp quickly pushed back on the report but did not outright deny that the Democratic leader urged Mr. Biden to drop out.
“Unless ABC’s source is Senator Chuck Schumer or President Joe Biden the reporting is idle speculation,” a Schumer spokesperson said. “Leader Schumer conveyed the views of his caucus directly to President Biden on Saturday.”
Earlier in the day, President Biden, who also tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, was seen slowly ascending the steps of Air Force One.
In an interview released on the same day, the 81-year-old president told BET that he would only consider withdrawing from the race if he faced a significant medical issue.
“If I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, you got this problem and that problem,” Mr. Biden said in the interview, which was taped Tuesday. The White House announced Wednesday that Mr. Biden has tested positive for COVID.
Not long after the ABC report, CNN reported that Mr. Biden is becoming more “receptive” to the push for him to leave the ticket and has gone from saying privately that Vice President Kamala Harris “can’t win” to questioning if she can win.
Adding to the pressure, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), one of the most powerful Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, issued a clear statement earlier on Wednesday. Schiff politely but firmly suggested that Biden should step aside to enhance the party’s chances of defeating former President Donald Trump in the next election.
