On Monday, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) addressed reporters days after being indicted on federal corruption charges.
During the press conference, the embattled Senator announced his re-election campaign while insisting he will be fully exonerated in the near future.
The news comes as a shock as more politicians join calls for Menendez to immediately resign. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and other Democrats serving the Garden State have called for his immediate resignation.
On Friday, the Democrat Senator and his wife were indicted on multiple charges including conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right.
Sen Menendez is facing up to 45 years in prison if convicted.
In the federal indictment, Menendez and his wife are accused of accepting bribes from three business people in exchange for actions he took as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. (RELATED: US Sen. Bob Menendez and Spouse Indicted)
“Those bribes included cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other things of value,” the indictment said. Federal authorities reportedly found gold bars and nearly $500,000 in cash stuffed throughout the senator’s home that they traced back to the businessmen Menendez allegedly worked with.
