Fiery exchanges disrupt high-stakes meeting…

Verbal clashes reportedly erupted during a tense White House Cabinet meeting on Thursday, as Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) mastermind Elon Musk faced off against Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy. According to sources obtained by The New York Times, the heated arguments stemmed from Musk’s controversial DOGE initiatives, which have led to mass layoffs and department shutdowns.

During the meeting, Musk criticized Rubio for failing to fire employees recommended for dismissal by DOGE. His comments provoked an angry response from Rubio, who reminded Musk that 1,500 State Department officials had already taken buyouts.

“Do they not count?” Rubio reportedly asked sarcastically. “Should I bring them back just to fire them again for show?”

The tension escalated as Rubio laid out his plans for the State Department, only for Musk to dismiss his remarks, quipping that Rubio was “good on TV” but unimpressive otherwise. The verbal sparring continued as President Trump observed in silence, arms folded, before finally stepping in.

“Secretary Rubio is doing a great job,” Trump reportedly stated, ending the argument.

Musk’s clash with Rubio wasn’t the only confrontation that night. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy also locked horns with Musk over the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and its outdated equipment.

Duffy accused Musk’s DOGE of attempting to fire air traffic controllers, highlighting the risks of reducing personnel in such a critical industry.

“What am I supposed to do?” Duffy asked. “I have multiple plane crashes to deal with, and your people want me to fire air traffic controllers?”

Musk dismissed the claim as false, but Duffy pushed back, stating he had firsthand knowledge from his own department. The argument intensified when Musk criticized diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) hiring practices in air traffic control towers, implying that more qualified personnel were needed.

“Hire people from MIT,” President Trump eventually interjected. “These air traffic controllers need to be geniuses.”

The Times has further details:

Thursday’s meeting, which was abruptly scheduled on Wednesday evening, was a sign that Mr. Trump was mindful of the growing complaints. He tried to offer each side something by praising both Mr. Musk and his cabinet secretaries. (At least one, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who has had tense encounters related to Mr. Musk’s team, was not present.) The president made clear he still supported the mission of the Musk initiative. But now was the time, he said, to be a bit more refined in its approach.

From now on, he said, the secretaries would be in charge; the Musk team would only advise.

It is unclear what the long-term impact of the meeting will be. Mr. Musk remains Mr. Trump’s biggest political financial supporter — just this week his super PAC aired $1 million worth of ads that said, “Thank you, President Trump” — and Mr. Musk’s control of the social media website X has made administration staff members and cabinet secretaries alike fearful that he will target them in public.

But if nothing else, the session laid bare the tensions within Mr. Trump’s team, and news of the sharp clashes spread quickly through senior ranks of cabinet agencies after it was over. This account is based on interviews with five people with knowledge of the events.

Trump’s Intervention and the Aftermath

While tensions ran high, Trump ultimately played referee, preventing the arguments from spiraling further. The meeting underscored the growing rift between Musk and key Cabinet officials, raising questions about DOGE’s influence on government policy.

With power struggles escalating, political insiders suggest this may not be the last explosive confrontation within the administration.

Key Takeaways from the White House Clash:

✔️ Musk accused Rubio of failing to fire personnel under DOGE’s recommendations.
✔️ Rubio fired back, pointing to the 1,500 employees already gone.
✔️ Duffy clashed with Musk over FAA staffing and safety concerns.
✔️ Trump intervened, suggesting more high-quality hires for air traffic controllers.

What Do You Think?

Should Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency have the power to fire government employees? Is the FAA in need of major reform?

Things need to change! There is entirely TOO MUCH corruption in OUR government, and it needs to be rooted out. There will be disruptions and problems but they can all be worked out as they go . Don’t shoot the messenger! America NEEDS a thorough house cleaning!

CUT the DC bureaucracy then Then
    scapal the Rest later

    Mike Bohannon

I agree with Trump that the bureaucracy needs to be cut, but that the agency heads ought to decide which cuts to make.
Better to get rid of a lot of unnecessary regulations that require more bureaucrats to monitor, than to just cut people for the sake of cutting people..

    Asbjorn O Moldver

Musk should be there ONLY to advise Trump on who and what to get rid of.

    Mike Bohannon

In addition, cutting the folks that have been there less than a year is easier, but it may also mean a lot of good/better employees are shoved out the door who could do a better job than many entrenched bureaucrats.
A high priority should be given to the many Obama and Biden political appointees that were moved into the bureaucracy as Obama and Biden exited the White House to block Trump policies.

How about increasing the age Air Traffic Controller must retire from 57 yo to 65 or better yet to whenever they can’t pass their performance exams, which are done quite regularly.
The same with pilots which is currently on 60 yo.
Both would keep the experience in place making it safer to fly.

Better to have the odd disagreement or debate than a bunch of gutless yes-men.

This is NOT an acceptable “referencing practice”, and should be discontinued. If the source cannot, or will not be named, then it must not be considered as a credible source. (This is not ‘whistleblowing’)

While I agree that each Agency needs to do a “Deep Dive” into the monetary spending, however, not at the cost of the precise functions of each Department. My concern about the Air Traffic Controllers is a multi-level concern. 1st, DEI, has no place in any job qualification, least of which, Air Traffic Controllers!!!! Each employee needs to be fully qualified, trained & licensed, furthermore, there should be continual upgrading of the qualification, with re-evals yearly. The number of Controllers per shift & location needs to be scrutinized & adjusted according to the demands of each airport, and if there are not sufficient controllers, flights should be canceled till there is sufficient number to handle the number of flights!!! For each of the Federal Departments being investigated, issues must be identified, increasing performance with regular oversight & identification of poor perform, adjustment/elimination of personal, requiring monthly reporting increased performance of each employee. Removing all Federal Departments OUT of Washington DC, and spreading them away from the East Coast. The ability to trace where all the Monies are being spent , the Person/persons receiving the monies, and how they are being spent! United States Dollars, need to take care of the United States Citizens who are paying the Taxes, we need to return to taking care of ourselves FIRST!!! Let DOGE rein, and find the fraud that the Politicians have fed our monies towards!!! Stop the Politicians having the ability for INSIDER TRADING that we, as the Citizens are not priviledged to get wealthy on…..but the Long-Timers in Congress and Senate have enjoyed all these years! The Supreme Court Judges aren’t doing their jobs either, the Judges are allowing all this Cabal to thrive while we the Citizens are suffering!!! I am 80, and I worked long and hard for what little I have, but Corporate has taken over, and our healthcare system is in the toilet, and healthcare is not being given to the elderly, Healthcare has become Socialized here in the United States…..what a travesty!!! I worked for Kaiser Permanente for 38 years, retired and just found out they DUMPED my retirement healthcare over to Cigna, who will adjust my coverage to their coverages(not good), while I have Medicare,(poor), and I am paying monthly for supplemental,(that increases every year), and my income does not increase to keep up!!! AND, there are those who are worst off than me!!! I am sure this letter will NOT be read, and what I have written really doesn’t matter, but I am sincerely disappointed with what the LEFT is doing/saying. When people migrated to these United States, the immigrants were told to Get A Job, Support Themselves, Learn the Language, and Become a Citizen all within a certain TimeFrame…………….why is that not THE REQUIREMENT NOW? George Soros for example, became a Citizen, but is doing a good job at DESTROYING the United States…………………isn’t that TREASON???? WE NEED TO STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR WHAT ALL OF OUR SOLDIERS HAVE DIED FOR………………OUR FREEDOM!!! NOW!!!

Government needs to be smaller, however, Elon is just slicing and dicing without any thought of performance or importance of team members he’s firing. Cuts need to be made, but carefully thought out so as not to lose critical employees…especially in areas of great importance such as air traffic controllers or CIA operatives and the like.

    Dennis J McLaughlin

Well, only comment is that doge should only advise the department heads and make suggestions on headcount and allow the cabinet members that run those departments have the final say or prior firing. And hiring

    PJ

Musk should only make recommendations AFTER an adequate position review of occupational series and grade compared to government performance expectations. Trump should direct agency Secretaries as to appropriate down-sizing. Agencies should follow OPM RIF procedures. They are complex but executing the regulations is not too time consuming. We have MANY MANY dedicated federal employees. We need to remove those who are not performing satisfactorily or who conduct does not reflect government expectations.

The leftwing press wants to create divisions within Trump’s team so it’s unsurprising they’d try to sensationalize an ordinary exchange of viewpoints which may vary. Trump put down the reporter who brought up the suggestion of a clash of viewpoints quickly– said it didn’t happen. Trump is being candid, as usual. If you’ve watched Rubio, you know his demeanor is always calm, and he’s soft spoken. It’d be hard to imagine his complaining that he feels left out of discussions on foreign policy when he’s been deeply involved in them, often appearing on MSM news programs to defend Administration policies. If he had a serious grievance he’d take it to Trump directly as opposed to raising it at a Cabinet meeting. As to Sean Duffey, Musk & Trump’s instincts are correct– the problem with Air Traffic Controllers lies in Biden/Buttigieg DEI insanity- inc. trying to hire ATCs with psychiatric conditions. A DEI Director (“Dr.” Jill’s pick, Cheatle) nearly resulted in Trump’s assassination. We all witnessed a clearly rattled, plump female agent unable to holster her weapon in Butler, PA after repeated attempts, and a petite female agent on stage, not tall enough to protect Trump’s large torso. If the shooter had not been wounded, he could have gotten off a 2nd head shot. Could she have dragged any president of Trump’s size off-stage if other agents in the protective detail were wounded? The answer is no. But disgraced Director Cheatle wanted Secret Service to be 30% female by 2030. Her “vision” for the agency nearly got Trump killed twice last fall during final months of the campaign. DEI=DIE. No one wants a DEI surgeon, a DEI pilot, DEI ATCs or a DEI Secret Service agent who got the job only because the agency lowered its hiring standards.
