The Trump campaign has filed a lawsuit against Nevada, claiming that the state’s Democratic Secretary of State Francisco “Cisco” Aguilar is not doing enough to prevent noncitizens from being included on voter registration rolls. The lawsuit argues that Aguilar has failed to implement adequate safeguards to protect the integrity of Nevada’s elections.
Joining the Trump campaign in the legal action are the Nevada GOP, the Republican National Committee (RNC) and a Clark County voter. The lawsuit targets Aguilar, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Nevada Democratic Party.
It aims to dispute former Republican Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske’s evaluation of Joe Biden’s 2020 win in Nevada. In 2021, Cegavske concluded that there was no “evidentiary support for the contention that the 2020 general election was plagued by widespread voter fraud.”
Secretary Aguilar has dismissed the GOP’s claims, stating that Nevada already has strong protections to prevent ineligible individuals, including noncitizens, from voting. “Any claims of a widespread problem are false and only create distrust in our elections,” Aguilar’s office said in response to the suit.
Despite this legal challenge, the Nevada GOP and RNC had recently praised the secretary of state’s office for removing over 76,000 inactive voters from the state’s voter list in August.
Trump, who narrowly lost Nevada in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, held a rally in Las Vegas on Friday, emphasizing border security as a key issue in his campaign.
