President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani met Friday in a high-stakes Oval Office meeting — their first face-to-face encounter.
The public tone was unexpectedly cordial. Trump described it as “a really good, very productive meeting,” and emphasized their shared goal: “We want this city of ours that we love to do very well.”
The warmth stood in sharp contrast to their earlier clashes. Throughout the campaign, Trump slammed Mamdani, calling him a “communist lunatic” and suggesting he might even be in the country illegally. “Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary… this is getting a little ridiculous,” he wrote in June. He later added, “A lot of people are saying he’s here illegally… we’re going to look at everything.”

Mamdani also took aim at Trump. During his victory speech, he addressed the president directly: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!” He added, “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.”
CBS News reports:
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday, “President Trump is willing to meet with anyone and talk to anyone and to try to do what’s right on behalf of the American people.”
Mamdani used similar language, saying his team reached out to set up the meeting “because I will work with anyone to make life more affordable for the more than 8.5 million people who call this city home.”
Ahead of the Oval Office meeting, Mamdani said he was preparing for any outcome. Few expected Trump to turn around and say he thought Mamdani would be a “really great mayor.”
“The better he does, the happier I am,” he added.

Why it matters
Tone shift: The meeting marks a significant change in posture from both men, suggesting a willingness to engage despite intense ideological differences.
Federal-city relationship: A president and the mayor-elect of the nation’s largest city sitting down together indicates that deeper national–local cooperation — or confrontation — may be coming.
🚨 Funniest. President. EVER!

REPORTER TO ZOHRAN MAMDANI: "Are you affirming you think President Trump is a FASCIST?"
MAMDANI: "I've-"
PRESIDENT TRUMP: "-that's OK. You can just say YES. It's easier than explaining it, I don't mind." *Pats Mamdani on the back*

Political optics: For Trump, the meeting signals a more bipartisan or noncombative image. For Mamdani, it demonstrates pragmatism and could calm concerns about his far-left positions.
Q: Stefanik has called Mamdani a 'jihadist.' Do you think you're standing next to a jihadist right now?

TRUMP: No, I don't. I met with a man who's a very rational person pic.twitter.com/DrdUFhwNHX
Policy stakes: With New York City facing rising living costs, infrastructure needs, immigration pressures, and more, the future of federal support could hinge on the dynamic between Trump and Mamdani.
