Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is spearheading efforts to overhaul the nation’s nutrition standards, advocating for a return to whole foods and streamlining school food preparation processes. In an interview with BlazeTV’s Sara Gonzalez of Sara Gonzales Unfiltered, Kennedy expressed his dissatisfaction with the current guidelines, describing them as unworkable and ineffective.
The Biden administration had put forth a new set of nutrition standards, initially scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 20, 2025. However, Kennedy revealed that these guidelines were overly complex and not practical for schools or parents to follow. “The document that we got from the Biden administration was 453 pages long. “Oh, it’s completely useless to a mother or to a school,” Kennedy stated. “We want a three-page document that essentially says you should be eating whole foods.”
Kennedy’s goal is to create a much more accessible set of recommendations for schools and families. Rather than overwhelming educators and parents with pages of technical jargon, he is advocating for a streamlined, three-page document that focuses on the importance of whole foods. His vision includes providing schools with the option to source fresh, local ingredients for meals, thus reducing reliance on processed foods and plastic packaging.
Under Kennedy’s plan, schools would be given greater flexibility to decide the specifics of their food offerings, but they would be encouraged to focus on general principles of nutrition, such as incorporating fresh produce, whole grains, and less processed food. “We don’t want a lot of plastic packaging, we want hot foods that are hopefully made on site,” Kennedy emphasized.
“We should have nutritionists in every school in this country like they do in Japan and in other nations that are supervising the food production and the nutrition of those kids and have much healthier kids,” Kennedy said. He argued that this investment in children’s health would lead to long-term benefits for both the students and the broader society.
Kennedy’s push for more efficient, locally sourced and whole food-focused school meals is part of his broader vision to improve public health, reduce reliance on processed foods, and promote better dietary habits across the nation. He is also working on cutting down waste within the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that the department runs more efficiently and effectively.
