Risk Of Death, Strokes And Heart Attacks Is Increased By 450% If Plastic Is In Your Arteries

The New England Journal of Medicine published an Italian study last week that is consequential to the fate of humankind. Most of the media was focused upon the puffery, posturing and handwringing associated with the upcoming presidential election. Part of the media’s silence about this landmark study was due to reporters’ lack of knowledge regarding the medical terminology used in the report. I will attempt to explain in non-medical language what the article said and the stunning implications and questions it raises.

Here is a bit of background: Narrowing of the two main neck arteries leading to your brain (carotid arteries) by cholesterol filled blockages (plaques) is caused by inflammation. I discuss, the environmental causes of inflammation and its lethal consequences in my book, Nobody Wants You Healthy: Achieving Better Health by Avoiding the Corruptions in Modern Medical Science.

When the carotid blockages reach a certain size, removal of the blockage is performed surgically in an effort to prevent a future stroke. In this study, the blockage material was sent to a lab and looked at under high powered microscopes. This is where it got interesting!

Sixty percent of patients had microscopic plastic particles inside their cholesterol blockage specimens.

Forty percent of patients had no plastic in their specimens.

The researchers then followed the patients for just under three years. The 60% of patients who had plastic in their specimen had rates of heart attack, stroke or death that were four-and-a-half times higher than those whose specimens were without plastic. That is a 450% higher rate!

The first question this report raises: Given that there is microscopic plastic in everyone’s food, water and air, how did 40% of people not have plastic inside their plaques? Did they clear it from their body due to special genetic makeup or unique behavioral choices?  

The second question: As explained in my book, the additives that make plastics unique are powerful hormone disrupting agents that lower both sexes’ most abundant hormone (testosterone). Testosterone controls metabolism and inflammation, and thus one’s risk of developing chronic and often lethal diseases. There are plenty of studies indicating that low testosterone at least doubles the risk of death over five years. The researchers did not measure testosterone levels to see if that could be the reason for the dramatic increase in death, heart attack and stroke rates among those with microplastic particles.

The implications for humankind are enormous. The volume of hormone disrupting additives used in plastics continues to climb annually.  A couple years ago, 400 million metric tons were made, which correlates to 200 times the toxic dose for all humans alive on the planet today. Studies have reported that 95% of U.S. tap water has microscopic plastic in it.  According to Consumer Reports, bottled water has even higher levels of microplastics. It is estimated that 80% of adult blood is found to have plastic in it when microfiltered.  The hormonal depletion is deadly.

The U.S. population has a 60% decline in testosterone levels since 1970 due to hormone disrupting chemicals. Currently, the 19- to 35-year-old group has a 40% rate of low testosterone. As a result, a third of teenagers and half of adults are diabetic or pre-diabetic. Rates of obesity and severely overweight are 80% in adults and 50% in teenagers.

Certain plastic additives cross the placenta and change brain wiring process in the fetus so as to create learning disabilities, behavioral problems and non-gender wiring.

Plastics kill and injure us. We need to both reduce our exposure to these chemicals while supplementing the testosterone hormone deficiency. We simply cannot avoid exposure to the hormone disrupting chemicals in plastics.

With no end to the growth of plastic production, the time left for humanity is reduced. An alternative material must be found before humans are too sick and too infertile to propagate our species.
