PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB) – And it will include attacks in space. China’s increasing military ‘exercises’ start to look more like operations. The head of Space Forces Indo-Pacific warned that China’s expanding military exercises, aided by an increased use of space, are blurring the line between drills and a potential invasion of Taiwan.

“It is clear in the increasing complexity with which the PLA exercises are done in a way that it becomes very difficult… to discern an exercise from an invasion, and that’s clearly by design,” the commander of Space Forces Indo-Pacific, said. “We have begun to see the space piece integrated into some of that.”

A decade ago, the Chinese only had about two dozen satellites. Now, they operate more than 1,000—most of which are “specifically designed to track U.S. forces.

“(China) has been building a space architecture specifically designed to keep the U.S. outside the Second Island Chain,” the commander said. Their strategic goal is to limit U.S. and allied forces’ ability to intervene in key conflicts, particularly in the South China Sea and around Taiwan and the Philippines.

NATIONAL SECURITY

SO MAYBE NOT SO DUMB? Justin Trudeau has claimed the aim of a “dumb” trade war launched by Trump is to usher in the “complete collapse” of the Canadian economy and make it easier for the US to annex Canada.

An urgent plea by five former defense secretaries — including Lloyd Austin, who stepped down in January — for Congress to immediately hold hearings on the recent firings of top military officers by the Trump team appears likely to go unanswered by GOP leadership.

Secretary Hegseth has welcomed Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) into the Pentagon, where it aims to cut 8% from next year’s budget. There’s certainly a need for efficiency at the Pentagon, which has failed seven audits in a row and relies on fax machines for weapons acquisitions. But DOGE shouldn’t have unfettered Pentagon access.

One day, US military personnel might target smart weapons using location data from Chinese or Russian versions of GPS, US researchers say.

HOMELAND DEFENSE

A Boeing-led team has finished building 20 new silos for the homeland missile defense system at Fort Greely, Alaska, growing the number of interceptors that can be emplaced there from 40 to 60.

PENTAGON WOKE WATCH

WAR DOESN’T CARE ABOUT YOUR RELIGIOUS PREFERENCES – Air Force Academy’s Muslim cadets reportedly denied accommodation during Ramadan. Some cadets may need to push through rigorous physical training without food or water or forgo a few days of the holy fast.

POLITICS

‘We are just getting started’: Trump touts his agenda to reshape America in his first address to a joint session of Congress since he reclaimed the White House.

Trump to launch new White House office focused on shipbuilding to revitalize the industry and bolster American naval strength.

Americans have been warned to brace for higher prices within days of Trump imposing US tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico and hiking tariffs on China.

US POWER OVERSEAS

Philippine forces and US Navy SEALs secured a gas and oil platform in the South China Sea in the latest joint combined exchange training between the two special operations units near the disputed waters.

An Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber flew with the Israeli Air Force and Royal Air Force over the eastern Mediterranean Sea on March 4, in the third Bomber Task Force mission to the Middle East region in the past month.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Trump’s pick as NATO ambassador says US commitment to the alliance is ‘ironclad.’

Cyber operations against Russia have not been stopped, the Pentagon confirmed. This, despite reports that Hegseth had halted offensive cyber actions against the country.

Volodymyr Zelensky has said his Oval Office meeting last week with Trump “did not go the way it was supposed to,” describing the fiery meeting as “regrettable” and noting that Ukraine is ready to negotiate an end to the conflict.

Trump’s pick to lead policy for the Pentagon wouldn’t say that Russia invaded Ukraine, making him the second top Defense Department nominee in a week to equivocate on the question.

IRAN THREAT/ISRAEL WARS

Trump State Department reinstates Houthis in Yemen as terrorist organization, reversing a Biden policy.

Egypt’s Gaza plan excludes Hamas from future governance.

SPACE THREAT

US space launch executives warned that the nation’s primary launch facilities may soon be unable to handle the projected surge in rocket launches, potentially hampering U.S. competitiveness in the expanding commercial space sector.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Japan set to field 2nd F-35B squadron by 2030, Amphibious Brigade drills with US Marines.

US MILITARY

The concept of air superiority is changing to increasingly leverage autonomous aircraft, nonkinetic capabilities, and space, but it remains vital if US expects to prevail in any future conflict, regardless of the cost.

A deep review of the Air Force’s paused plans for a new crewed sixth-generation stealth combat jet c concluded unambiguously that the service needs such aircraft to achieve air superiority in future high-end fights.

USS Nimitz (CVN-68), and more than 3,000 sailors, will move to Norfolk in 2026 for the carrier’s final homeport change, before it starts the decommissioning process in 2026.

A slim, partially covered naval ship that recently emerged in Washington state is the Defiant, a new medium-sized uncrewed surface vessel (USV) designed from the keel up to operate without humans onboard.

With limited resources and funds, an Army unit is looking to make its own drones at a fraction of the cost of commercially available systems procured through traditional acquisition.

Voice-controlled drones are a military game-changer, Primordial Labs says.

Defense firm ‘Mach’ announces deal with Army lab for vertical takeoff ‘Strategic Strike’ cruise missile.

Five former defense secretaries including Lloyde Austin? Sounds familiar. I wonder why noone requested a hearing on the hundred senior officers that Obama got rid of.
