Chinese Bulk Carrier Suspected In Undersea Cable Sabotage; Danish Navy Shadowing Vessel

A Chinese bulk carrier, Yi Peng, is under scrutiny after strong evidence linked it to the destruction of two undersea telecom cables connecting Finland and Germany with fellow NATO allies Sweden and Lithuania.

A Danish naval vessel is shadowing the Yi Peng as it attempts to leave the Baltic Sea—and two more are converging on its location—raising the prospect of an armed escalation after what Western officials have labeled an act of sabotage.

According to reports, the vessel was observed in the vicinity of the severed fiber-optic cables, exhibiting unusual behavior. Investigations reveal that the ship passed directly over the cables at the times they were severed—Sunday at 8:00 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and Monday at 2:00 a.m. GMT.

In response, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius condemned the incident, describing it as deliberate. “No one believes the cables were accidentally damaged. I also don’t believe a ship’s anchor accidentally caused the damages.”

NATO members in the Baltic region rely heavily on undersea communications infrastructure for secure connectivity. The incident has sparked concerns over the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and potential geopolitical motives behind such attacks.

Timeline of Events:

-Sunday, 8:00 a.m. GMT: First cable severed.

-Monday, 2:00 a.m. GMT: Second cable severed.

-Current Status: Yi Peng is under surveillance and being followed by the Danish Navy.
