Congressman Concerned After Possible Explosion Seen in Skies Above Montana

Video footage from the skies above Billings, Montana, shows what some are calling a debris trail followed by a possible explosion.

As it went viral, the city of Billings’ official Twitter account responded to the video and rampant speculation, clarifying that its leaders were in contact with Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) and Montana Disaster Emergency Services (DES). Neither reported any explosions in the airspace over Big Sky Country. The city’s account added that none of its first responders were dispatched on calls related to the video and that the footage could not be substantiated.

Despite the Tweet and response from the governor, Montana Congressman Matt Rosendale (R) remains concerned with the perceived lack of transparency following the news of suspected Chinese surveillance balloons over North America (one was reported hovering over Latin America on Friday).

Billings is some 200 miles from Malmstrom Air Force Base. The base is responsible for the 150 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch sites across the sparsely-populated state.

The Washington Examiner has more on Rosendale’s requests:

“Additionally, I have requested a briefing from Sec of Defense Lloyd Austin to get accurate information on these developments,” he said in a follow-up tweet.

The balloon was detected by government officials Wednesday. The Pentagon said it deliberated shooting the balloon down but decided against it.

Officials say the balloon poses no civilian threat and is likely for surveillance. The balloon sighting did cause Secretary of State Antony Blinken to cancel his planned trip to China.

“Conditions were not conducive for a constructive visit at this time,” Blinken said.
