LONG BEACH, Calif. — A long-running Southern California fireworks show that has raised millions for charity will not take place this year after state regulators denied a permit, citing environmental concerns ahead of the nation’s 250th Independence Day celebration.
The California Coastal Commission rejected a final request to hold the annual “Big Bang on the Bay” fireworks display in Long Beach, effectively canceling the event for 2026.
Organizers had planned an expanded show to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence, but officials required the event to transition away from traditional fireworks.
Environmental Concerns Drive Decision
Regulators pointed to concerns about pollution and impacts on wildlife, including potential harm to birds and marine environments, as justification for denying the permit.
The commission had encouraged organizers to replace fireworks with alternatives such as drone shows, a shift that aligns with broader environmental policies affecting coastal events across California.
Charity Impact
The canceled event has historically served as a major fundraiser, generating money for local youth and community programs.
Organizers say the loss of the fireworks display — especially during a milestone year like the 250th anniversary — will significantly impact charitable fundraising efforts tied to the celebration.
Cost and Feasibility Challenges
While drone shows were proposed as an alternative, organizers argued the cost — estimated at roughly $200,000 compared to about $40,000 for fireworks — made the switch financially impractical.
As a result, the event was canceled rather than replaced.
Broader Trend
The decision reflects a growing trend in parts of California, where stricter environmental regulations and safety concerns are reshaping traditional Fourth of July celebrations.
Some cities have already scaled back or replaced fireworks with drone displays, sparking debate over balancing environmental protection with longstanding patriotic traditions.
What Comes Next
Organizers have not ruled out future efforts to revive the event, either through appeals or alternative formats.
But for now, one of the region’s most recognizable Independence Day celebrations — and a key charity fundraiser — will be absent during America’s semiquincentennial milestone.

What else can be written about California. We all know what they are actually about!
There was a time when people like this were either ignored, pushed out of society, or, in cases of them being violent … strung up.
Long live representative democracy, capitalism, and freedom!
We will tolerate nothing else!
Sooner rather than later, our country will no longer honor any holiday that promotes patriotism. I have lived on this earth and in the USA for over 83 years. Never have I seen so much hatred toward America. Democrats especially appear to hate everything good about our country. This makes me extremely sad.
California residents need to stand up to the handful of socialists running their state who are trying to erase everything American. The country’s 250th anniversary is certainly something to celebrate with lots of fireworks and parties. Patriotism is nearly dead in California. So sad…😪
