Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is once again facing scrutiny over her family’s finances after a newly released congressional financial disclosure showed her household may have a negative net worth, despite previous filings that appeared to value her husband’s business interests in the millions.

The Minnesota Democrat has strongly denied claims that she is secretly wealthy, arguing that earlier disclosures contained accounting mistakes that inflated the reported value of family assets.

New Filing Shows Modest Assets

According to Omar’s 2025 financial disclosure, her household assets were reported in a range topping out at roughly $125,000 and could be as low as $20,000.

When reported liabilities — including student loans and credit card debt — are factored in, the couple’s estimated net worth ranges from approximately $80,000 in the red to about $95,000 in positive equity.

The filing marks another twist in an ongoing controversy surrounding the business interests of Omar’s husband, political consultant Tim Mynett.

Business Valuations Swing Dramatically

Questions about the couple’s finances intensified after Omar amended a previous disclosure that appeared to show between $5 million and $30 million in assets tied largely to Mynett’s businesses.

In the latest filing:

  • Mynett’s defunct California winery, eStCru, generated between $200 and $1,000 in income.
  • Rose Lake Capital, another business that previously drew attention, reported no income.
  • Rose Lake Capital was valued between $1 and $1,000 in Omar’s 2023 disclosure.

However, in Omar’s 2024 filing, the company’s reported value surged dramatically, landing between $5 million and $25 million.

A similar shift occurred with eStCru. The winery’s valuation had previously been listed at no more than $50,000 before later appearing with a reported value as high as $5 million.

Omar has maintained that the inflated figures were the result of reporting errors rather than evidence of hidden wealth.

Republicans Renew Criticism

The shifting numbers have provided Republicans with fresh ammunition against Omar, one of the most prominent members of the progressive congressional group known as “The Squad.”

“Voters see right through the corrupt lies of Ilhan Omar,” Republican National Committee spokeswoman Delanie Bomar told the New York Post.

“Omar has spent her entire career covering up Democrat-enabled fraud that cost taxpayers billions, so it’s no surprise that she would do the same for her husband,” Bomar added.

Congressional Scrutiny Continues

The financial disclosure questions had already attracted the attention of House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.).

Comer’s committee has examined the reported increase in the couple’s assets amid broader concerns surrounding Minnesota’s massive Somali social services fraud scandal, which prosecutors have described as one of the largest pandemic-related fraud cases in U.S. history.

Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and has not been charged with, or formally accused of, any crime related to the fraud investigation.

Money Questions Extend Beyond Omar

Omar is not the only high-profile Democrat facing questions about finances.

In Arizona, Sen. Ruben Gallego’s campaign spending has come under renewed scrutiny as speculation grows about a potential 2028 presidential bid.

A recent Politico report found that Gallego’s leadership PAC paid for family-related travel connected to destinations including Miami, Chicago, and Disney properties.

Federal Election Commission records reviewed by the outlet also showed more than $18,000 in child care reimbursements since 2019.

One reimbursement included a $400 payment to Gallego’s mother-in-law for babysitting services.

The report also linked a 2023 Super Bowl trip involving Gallego and his wife, Sydney, to a joint campaign account he shared with former Rep. Eric Swalwell.

An unnamed source familiar with Gallego’s spending criticized the pattern, telling Politico:

“He just spends his campaign account like it’s his personal slush fund. He’s using campaign cash to live a luxury lifestyle.”

Gallego Defends Spending

Gallego did not dispute the expenditures and argued they complied with federal campaign finance rules.

“This is not breaking news,” Gallego said in a statement to Politico. “With the rising costs of child care and the burden it has on the budgets of American families, Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the White House alike regularly travel with their wives and children, as is permitted by the FEC.”

According to the report, some individuals familiar with the spending expressed concern that the issue could become a challenge if Gallego ultimately pursues a White House campaign.

Gallego has publicly acknowledged that he is considering the possibility of a 2028 presidential run.
