Iran Suspends Nuclear Watchdog Cooperation Amid Rising Tensions

In a major escalation, Iran has officially suspended its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following recent U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on its nuclear facilities. As Al Jazeera reports, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed legislation halting IAEA cooperation after rejecting a request from the agency’s director to inspect the damaged sites:

“Masoud Pezeshkian promulgated the law suspending cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency,” Iranian state TV reported on Wednesday.

The announcement comes a week after Iran’s parliament passed legislation to suspend cooperation with the IAEA, citing Israel’s June 13 surprise attack on Iran and later strikes by the US on Iranian nuclear facilities.

According to the parliament resolution, IAEA inspectors will not be allowed to visit nuclear sites without approval from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

During a daily briefing, the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Iranian decision was “obviously concerning”.

“I think the secretary-general has been very consistent in his call for Iran to cooperate with the IAEA, and, frankly, for all countries to work closely with the IAEA on nuclear issues,” they told reporters.

Iranian officials argue that the IAEA’s activities inadvertently facilitated the recent strikes on key nuclear sites — including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — compromising the safety of both infrastructure and personnel. Despite suspending cooperation with the agency, Tehran claims that it remains committed to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which its predecessor government signed in 1970, and continues to insist that its nuclear program is strictly peaceful.

The IAEA has confirmed it is awaiting formal notice from Tehran while continuing to maintain a presence in the country, though inspectors have been sidelined since the June airstrikes. The United States and Germany have condemned Iran’s decision, urging a return to transparent cooperation. Israel has called for the reinstatement of sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear accord.

The move deepens tensions with the West and casts doubt on the future of nuclear diplomacy as Iran races to rebuild what it has lost.

Seems that if there’s no ‘nuclear site’, then there’s no problem. Easy fix….Eliminate all nuclear sites.

When you get power-hungry people like this who are in a position where they can sacrifice “their” people by the millions to get the results they want. This bird, as well as the mentally ill dictator of Russia, will never give up as long as they can use and abuse the people they command. Trump cannot play games with these people. They are not going to give in in any way. Iran is not going to give in like Syria did. They will take revenge, and it will take one major incident in the U.S. for us to realize that we should have done something beforehand. We also have a Putin who has run his country into the ground, and sacrificed the lives of a million men, reminiscent of the many lives lost in WWII. By fully supporting Ukraine, we can put Putin (and Russia) out of its misery. Neither Iran nor Russia should be allowed to reach this level of brutality ever again. For Russia, it’s been over a century, and Iran approaching half a century. Enough is enough.
