President Joe Biden has decided to give a controversial prime-time speech on Thursday.
Speaking to the nation in front of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, Biden will tell Americans that democracy is at stake, their freedoms are “under attack” and only one party has fought to protect them.
Fox News reports:
“He will speak about how the core values of this nation — our standing in the world, our democracy — are at stake,” a White House official confirmed to Fox News. “He will talk about the progress we have made as a nation to protect our democracy but how our rights and freedoms are still under attack.”
The White House official added that the president “will make clear who is fighting for those rights, fighting for those freedoms and fighting for our democracy.”
Thursday’s speech comes one week after the president called MAGA Republicans “semi-fascist” at a donor event in Maryland and barely two months before the midterm elections.
Later, at another event, Biden said, “I respect conservative Republicans. I don’t respect these MAGA Republicans…There are not many real Republicans anymore.”
Biden’s strategy is simple enough — keep Trump at the center of the conversation, knowing most independents don’t want Trump to run in 2024.
A majority of voters don’t want Biden to run for reelection either. Yet the polls show that swing voters aren’t factoring Biden into their decision-making process the way they are with Trump.
Tonight, the president is speaking from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where CNN reports he’ll accuse Republicans of threatening the FBI while claiming to support law enforcement and push for an assault weapons ban.
CNN adds:
Vice President Kamala Harris also took to the campaign trail Saturday, and issued a stark warning on threats to democracy during a DNC fundraiser in California.
“I was there in Washington, DC, after the election, when we won, and on January 6, I was there in Washington, DC — I was still a senator and the vice president-elect — when there was a direct, tangible attack on our democracy,” Harris told supporters. “When we talk about what is at stake, in terms of who represents what, we have to understand that this is a moment in time that challenges everyone running for office to state where they stand on preserving and defending our democracy.”
Democrats hope to expand their razor-thin majorities in the House and Senate. For most of the year, Republicans have led in the generic congressional ballot. However, recent special elections show the Dobbs ruling energized the Democratic base while GOP enthusiasm has faltered.
Still, dismissing roughly half the nation as irredeemable, as Biden and others are doing, is an especially risky gambit. Just ask Hillary Clinton.

Biden is looking for straws to change the political thinking to his way.
