Prosecutors in the murder trial of Karmelo Anthony reportedly dismissed several potential jurors after they expressed hesitation about convicting the teenager if it could send him to prison for life, despite the brutality of his crime.

Anthony is charged in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a track meet in Frisco, Texas. He has claimed he acted in self-defense following an altercation over seating inside a team tent.

During jury selection, prosecutors questioned prospective jurors about whether Anthony’s age, race or resemblance to their own children would affect their.

NATIONAL SECURITY

PREPARING FOR ARMAGEDDON – NATO to hold nuclear exercise despite Russian warnings. NATO will push ahead with long-planned nuclear exercises next week despite rising tensions over the war in Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin’s insistence that he is not bluffing about using all available means to defend Russian territory, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Tuesday.

Security aid could protect partners in Russia, China’s crosshairs. The success of the Ukrainian army in defending its territory from Russia’s invasion this year has kicked into high gear the discussion about how the U.S. can support countries in its adversaries’ war path.

FAILIN BIDEN – Missing the target: Leadership actions on drones put lives at risk and undermine US security. Exactly 21 years ago today U.S. security leaders first employed a weapon off a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA)/drone in combat—Predator MQ-1 tail number 3034, callsign Wildfire 34. Perhaps the Biden administration saw a certain poetic justice in choosing today to implement a new classified policy institutionalizing strict limits on counterterrorism drone strikes out of warzones.

HOMELAND SECURITY

CHINA THREAT

‘LEADER FOR LIFE’ – Xi Jinping poised to consolidate power at China’s Communist Party Congress. Xi Jinping is poised to cement his role as China’s most powerful leader in decades, as members of the country’s ruling Communist Party meet for a twice-a-decade leadership reshuffle that begins Sunday. In recent years, these meetings have seen a streamlined transfer of power: the convention is for the top party leader, having completed two five-year terms, to pass the baton to a carefully chosen successor. But this year, Xi is expected to smash that precedent, taking on a third term as general secretary of the party and pitching China into a new era of strongman rule.

‘We don’t have a NATO here’: How the US Army plans to counter China. The U.S. Army is stepping up its relationship-building efforts in the Pacific region in a bid to counter China’s geopolitical influence.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Kremlin war hawks demand more devastating strikes on Ukraine. Moscow’s barrage of missile strikes on cities all across Ukraine has elicited celebratory comments from Russian officials and pro-Kremlin pundits, who in recent weeks have actively criticized the Russian military for a series of embarrassing setbacks on the battlefield.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 231. United States President Joe Biden said he doubted whether Russian President Vladimir Putin would use a tactical nuclear weapon as Ukraine pleaded for a rapid increase in Western military aid to defend against missile attacks on its cities.

G-7 demands Russian withdrawal from Ukraine, pledges continued support. In a speech to G-7 leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for more air defense after a second day of Russian attacks on civilians.

Russian military ‘exhausted,’ Putin’s judgment ‘flawed,’ UK spy chief says. Jeremy Fleming, head of Britain’s GCHQ intelligence agency, said in a rare address that Ukraine is “turning the tide” as Russia runs low on weapons, troops and friends.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

THIS IS WHY THEY CUT PRODUCTION IN FIRST PLACE – Biden “to re-evaluate” US-Saudi relationship after OPEC oil cut. President Biden will “continue to re-evaluate” the U.S.’ relationship with Saudi Arabia after a group of international oil exporters and Russia decided to significantly cut oil production in response to falling fuel prices, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told CNN on Tuesday.

Coast Guard ship seizes nearly $50 million worth of hashish, meth in Middle East. A U.S. Coast Guard cutter seized an estimated $48 million in illicit drugs from a fishing vessel in the Gulf of Oman earlier this week, bringing an international maritime task force’s total to more than $300 million in drug busts so far this year.

PENTAGON WATCH

Now is the time to rename the carrier John C Stennis. The USS John C. Stennis honors a noted racist, the author argues. It is time for the Navy and Congress to rename it and send a message of inclusion.

Three Marine recruits make emergency appeal in court to keep beards at boot camp. Three Sikh recruits fought for an emergency appeal in federal court on Tuesday, citing their religious beliefs in hopes of being able to attend Marine Corps Basic Training without having to shave their beards or forgo their traditional turbans during boot camp.

‘A’ for effort, ‘F’ for execution as a general defends women in service. Our leaders have a duty to stand up for those in their charge. But how they say it is just as important as what they say.

SPACE THREAT

Space Force telescope will hunt spacecraft, asteroids and comets. The Space Force’s space surveillance telescope is permanently relocated to Australia after a few years of testing in the United States.

US MILITARY

Building the Air Force the US needs. North Korea is again launching missiles, Iran continues inching towards a nuclear weapons capability, Russia is escalating its aggression in Ukraine, and China is sprinting to field a military capable of invading Taiwan and defeating any effort by Washington to intervene.

Army prepares for dispersed warfare with high casualties. Fighting in Ukraine continues to show senior Army leaders and thinkers the value of two things that the service hasn’t been doing at scale for a long, long time — reconstitution and long-range, large-unit dispersion.

US Army tinkering with aerial-tier network to link Pacific soldiers. The U.S. Army is interested in using airborne assets to extend lines of communication across the vast Indo-Pacific region, where watery expanses, thick foliage and technologically advanced adversaries can hamstring connectivity.

VERY COOL – Smart shirt could detect, and one day treat, fatal wounds. Quickly identifying and treating serious wounds is an age-old problem that’s killed countless soldiers, but it could see a solution in new technology that uses embedded sensors to detect, alert and one day treat injuries.
