Republicans like Ben Carson, Kristi Noem and Greg Abbott will have to be extra vigilant in the fight against identity theft for years — perhaps the rest of their lives.
In a startling revelation, The Washington Post reports that the House committee investigating the U.S. Capitol attack “inadvertently” shared the Social Security numbers of 1,900 Republican officials and their family members.
The Post explains that the SSNs came from White House visitor logs.
But why did they become available to the public, you ask? All because the committee forgot to redact the numbers when it published the records obtained from the National Archives.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) told the Post that no government official ever informed her that her children’s SSNs were exposed and potentially compromised. According to the Post’s findings, the government doesn’t seem to have notified anyone affected.
As the Post reports:
While the spreadsheet with the numbers was taken down Wednesday, the high-profile nature of the people whose data was exposed probably puts them at an “elevated risk”because the information would be especially useful to intelligence agencies, said James Lee, chief operating officer of the Identity Theft Resource Center, a nonprofit organization that advises victims of identity crimes and compromises.
Lee recommended that people listed follow common tips for victims of identity crimes, including freezing their credit, using a multi-factor authentication app for their online accounts and setting up credit and account monitoring.

In a letter posted on Twitter after publication, an attorney representing Noem asked the White House, Government Publishing Office, National Archives and Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.), who chaired the committee, to provide a detailed accounting of “how the breach of privacy occurred, who was responsible, what steps each of you has taken to remedy the breach, and what specific measures and remedies will be taken to protect Governor Noem and her family in light of the public dissemination of their private information and the heightened risk for identity theft and and other future privacy violations.”
“Whether it was a careless and sloppy handling of records or a deliberate disregard of decorum, either scenario is a perfunctory and callous display of government and a frightening reminder of the current state in Washington,” said former housing and urban development secretary Ben Carson, whose name was listed in the spreadsheet alongside a Social Security number. “President Reagan was a savant indeed — the nine most frightening words to hear are ‘I am from the government and here to help.’”
