Texas Guard Seizes Island Used As Base By Mexican Cartels

ANALYSIS – In the ongoing battle between the Texas National Guard, the Joe Biden Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Mexican narco-terrorists invading our border, Texas seems to be gaining the upper hand.

After seizing an island controlled by heavily armed drug cartels, Texas is now building an 80-acre military base camp to consolidate National Guard troops near the border. 

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Friday that the new base will provide a home to about 1,800 soldiers to better defend the southern border from Mexican drug cartels and illegal aliens.

The Guard base, which will extend along the Rio Grande and six miles south to Shelby Park, will be able to house 2,300 troops, if needed.

According to Newsweek:

A 300-bed capacity is expected by mid-April, with 300 additional beds added every 30 days beyond that point. The camp will include individual rooms for soldiers as well as recreational rooms, Wi-Fi and a large dining hall.

Part of that consolidated Texas military presence included the seizing and securing of an uninhabited island in the Rio Grande that had long been used as a base and safe haven by ruthless Mexican narco-terrorists.

Fronton Island was seized and secured by the Texas National Guard and Department of Public Safety last November.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said Wednesday that she recently returned from Fronton Island, described as being “on the most violent part of the border.” According to Buckingham, it was a site of automatic gunfire and continuous violence.

As Newsweek separately reported:

Buckingham recently touted the efforts of statewide officials to maintain safety in an area described as a “densely wooded” 170-acre refuge that “provided concealment for trans-national criminal activity.” Texas and Mexican cartels both claimed occupancy of the land before it was seized.

“They had literally a safe haven to stash weapons, drugs and people,” said Buckingham, a former state senator who was elected to her current position in 2022. “Tons and tons of migrants coming across.”

Texas officials also discovered explosive devices and weapons illegal in the U.S., as well as a “massive amount of drugs that could kill every man, woman or child a couple times over.” She was referring to fentanyl.

Buckingham added: “I can tell you there are no more weapons caches and people coming across [the border].”

Governor Abbott noted that the consolidation of Texas Guard troops on the border is akin to “amassing a large army in a very strategic area,” noting how illegal alien crossings have decreased dramatically in the last month.

He said such migrant encounters have dwindled from 3,000 to 4,000 to about 1% of that number (30-40) in recent weeks.

Abbott emphasized the key role his razor wire barriers were playing in this dramatic reduction. “Illegal crossings are down and, coincidentally, razor wire is up.”

He added that the “effectiveness” of razor wire is clear in deterring migrants from entering the United States illegally.
