A new campaign ad for a Michigan Democrat congressional candidate in one of the nation’s tightest races tells a harrowing tale of a struggling family and a working-class candidate who can’t afford air conditioning and whose children are forced to wear taped-together shoes.
But in reality, Hillary Scholten makes five times as much as most families in her district.
The ad starts with Scholten, with her husband and children, sitting around a table in what appears to be a modest home.
“Times are tough,” Scholten solemnly intones. “And like most Michigan families, we’re making do with less and making things last longer.”
The ad then cuts to footage of a switched-off air conditioner, and a child wearing sandals held together by duct tape.
The ad gives the impression Scholten and her family are struggling to get by.
But reality tells a different story.
Scholten and her family are in the upper echelon of income earners.
“Scholten netted more than $200,000 last year working as an immigration attorney for a Grand Rapids-area law firm,” The Washington Free Beacon reports after reviewing her financial disclosure forms. Scholten is running in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District, which is centered in Grand Rapids. The median family income in Grand Rapids is $44,224, around one-fifth of Scholten’s income.
Her husband likely makes just as much, if not more.
“Her family’s total income was likely far higher given her husband scored consulting fees from two nonprofits, on top of his salary as a professor at a local university,” The Free Beacon notes.
Scholten faces Republican John Gibbs in a district that is almost evenly split between Republicans and Democrats and is currently represented by a Republican.
Gibbs is a Trump supporter who narrowly defeated incumbent Republican Congressman Peter Meijer after national Democrats ran ads on Gibbs’ behalf to give him the Republican nomination. (RELATED: Democrats Successfully Influence Republican Primaries in Maryland And…)
The race is rated either a toss-up or slightly favored for Scholten.
