Authorities are investigating a string of high-profile burglaries targeting professional athletes, including Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, both three-time Super Bowl champions. The home invasions appear to be the work of a sophisticated South American crime syndicate that has targeted affluent neighborhoods across the United States.

In Kelce’s case, burglars stole $20,000 in cash and caused significant damage to an entryway at his mansion in Leadwood, Kansas, while he was playing at Arrowhead Stadium. Law enforcement sources confirmed the recovery of one stolen item—a watch belonging to Kelce—found 1,400 miles away in Providence, Rhode Island.

The same group is suspected of targeting the Wisconsin residence of Milwaukee Bucks power forward Bobby Portis, along with luxury homes from Minnesota to California. Investigators believe the perpetrators specialize in identifying high-profile targets with known public schedules. Both Kelce and Mahomes’ homes were burglarized in early October while they were away for games.

The FBI has issued warnings to both the NBA and NFL, highlighting the involvement of organized professional thieves from South America. The perpetrators employ advanced techniques such as pre-surveillance, drone usage and signal jamming to execute their crimes. They typically target unoccupied homes, often where alarm systems are inactive and focus on stealing cash and resalable luxury items.

In response, the NBA has advised players to enhance their home security measures. Recommendations include updating alarm systems with cameras, securing valuables in safes, removing online real estate photos, employing protective guard services and considering guard dogs.

The NFL has also alerted teams about this trend, encouraging players to be cautious with their social media activity and to implement robust security measures.

The FBI is continuing to investigate these incidents as part of an international organized crime wave.
