Suspect In Infamous Unsolved Murders Arrested

Police have captured the individual they believe is responsible for the serial murder of women – and at least one child – on Long Island. The case captured national attention after beachgoers began stumbling upon human remains, including an unidentified toddler, over a decade ago.

Rex Heuermann has been identified as the suspect in the murders of at least 10 people and possibly 18. He hid in plain sight for years while the manhunt went cold.

He will be arraigned in court this morning.

In 2010 and 2011, New York authorities discovered 11 sets of human remains strewn along a suburban Long Island beach highway. Those who have been identified are Shannan Gilbert, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack. 

Fox News can confirm that the large police presence in Massapequa Park is connected to the Gilgo Beach developments. The activity has drawn neighbors out of their homes in the suburban village, despite rainy weather in the area Friday morning.

Neighbors around a property that has been swarmed by police in Massapequa Park told Fox News Digital that the man who has lived there his whole life is a “neighborhood creep.”

The murders have remain unsolved more than a decade after the search for missing escort Shannan Gilbert, 24, first led police to the bodies of multiple sex workers and other victims east of .

“There's somebody after me,” Gilbert told 911 shortly before her disappearance. She was unable to provide dispatchers with her location.
