WASHINGTON — President Trump is threatening to declare a national emergency in Washington, D.C. — a move that would put local police under federal control and force cooperation with ICE.
The clash comes after Mayor Muriel Bowser says she expects the Metropolitan Police to defy ICE under the city’s sanctuary policy, following the expiration of the president’s 30-day emergency authority.
Trump, once complimentary of Bowser’s cooperation with his administration, now accuses her of bending to pressure from the Democratic Party.
“It has been a beautiful thing to watch but, now, under pressure from the Radical Left Democrats, Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has presided over this violent criminal takeover of our Capital for years, has informed the Federal Government that the Metropolitan Police Department will no longer cooperate with ICE in removing and relocating dangerous illegal aliens,” Trump said in a Monday morning statement.
“If I allowed this to happen, CRIME would come roaring back. To the people and businesses of Washington, D.C., DON’T WORRY, I AM WITH YOU, AND WON’T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN,” the president continued.
“I’ll call a National Emergency, and Federalize, if necessary!!!”
If carried out, the emergency declaration could allow Trump to invoke Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act — a provision that grants the federal government broad authority over the District in times of crisis.
That could lead to the federalization of the MPD or the deployment of National Guard and federal agents to enforce immigration law directly — a rare but not unprecedented step. (Trump previously exercised limited emergency authority over D.C. police during a 30-day period this past summer.)
Critics of the city’s policy argue it effectively shields individuals who violate federal law. Trump allies say the mayor’s stance undermines the rule of law and puts citizens at risk.
The White House has not confirmed whether an executive order is imminent.
