Biden Appoints Neera Tanden Domestic Policy Adviser

-

She may not be a household name, but has advised President Biden for some time.

And she's getting a promotion.

A well-known ideologue, Tanden worked on several Democratic presidential campaigns before then-President-elect Biden nominated her to be director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Tanden's path to confirmation collapsed after West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin withdrew his support. The failure was mainly of her own making. A long history of injudicious tweets disparaging Republicans, and some Democrats, didn't help.

Despite deleting over 1,000 tweets, Tanden failed to persuade senators she could negotiate across the aisle in good faith.

Nevertheless, Biden brought her into his administration, where she will now assume the position of domestic policy advisor, replacing the outgoing Susan Rice.

The Hill reports:

“I am pleased to announce that Neera Tanden will continue to drive the formulation and implementation of my domestic policy, from economic mobility and racial equity to , immigration and ,” Biden said in a statement.

He noted that Tanden will be the first Asian American to lead any of the three major White House policy councils in history. Tanden was previously president and CEO of the Center for American Progress and the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

Biden had nominated Tanden to head the Office of Management and Budget in 2021 at the start of his administration. She withdrew her nomination after not getting support from centrist Senate Democrats amid controversy, which stemmed from her time at the Center for American Progress. She had written risky tweets, including one comparing Senate Minority Leader (R-Ky.) to the “Harry Potter” character Voldemort.

Tanden's more noteworthy controversies include outing a sexual harassment victim at her liberal think tank and punching a progressive journalist who asked about her boss, , supporting the Iraq War.

Naturally, Biden's statement highlighted her professional accomplishments and liberal bona fides:

“She was a key architect of the Affordable Care Act and helped drive key domestic policies that became part of my agenda, including clean energy subsidies and sensible gun reform. While growing up, Neera relied on some of the critical programs that she will oversee as Domestic Policy Advisor, and I know those insights will serve my Administration and the American people well,” Biden said in his statement.
