Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent decision regarding a key position overseeing the United States’ military application of nuclear science has critics questioning whether the appointment was based on merit. The selection has also sparked concerns about potential risks to national security.

The controversy involves a new hire at the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, a move some suggest could indicate broader plans Harris has for national defense.

Controversial Background

Before joining the Department of Energy, the appointee, Karthika Nair, worked at the Stimson Center, a think tank known for its research on international security and defense. The organization has received funding from various sources, including George Soros’ Open Society Foundations and the Embassy of the State of Qatar, according to a report by Fox News Digital.

During her time at the Stimson Center, Nair authored a piece criticizing the U.S. government’s handling of security clearances, particularly for applicants with foreign ties. She argued that biases against certain racial or ethnic groups have discouraged qualified candidates from applying for sensitive national security positions.

Since February, Nair has served as a special assistant at the National Nuclear Security Administration. In this role, she advocated for eliminating “white supremacy” within nuclear field programs. She also supports “queering nuclear weapons” as part of broader diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts.

Nair’s approach focuses on changing how nuclear weapons are perceived – not as tools of security, but as sources of significant harm to marginalized communities. She emphasizes the importance of telling the stories of those affected by the production and testing of these weapons, including the displacement, illness and trauma – claiming they outweigh the benefits.

In her writing, she’s reiterated her desire to integrate DEI more fully into the nuclear field, stating that “Considerable progress has been made in advancing DEI in the nuclear field, but the largest obstacle remains in ensuring that nuclear security practitioners understand how DEI can serve as a tool to strengthen nuclear security.”

The effective use of America’s nuclear arsenal during the Cold War is widely believed to have played a crucial role in preventing a nuclear holocaust with the Soviet Union. This strategy, known as “nuclear deterrence,” relied on the concept of mutually assured destruction (MAD), where both the United States and the Soviet Union had the capability to inflict devastating nuclear retaliation in the event of an attack. The sheer scale of potential destruction acted as a powerful deterrent, preventing either side from initiating a nuclear conflict.

Critical aspects of this policy, such as maintaining a nuclear triad and offering “extended deterrence” to our allies, remain vital components of our national defense strategy.

Nair’s focus on DEI has raised alarms among some observers, who argue that prioritizing these principles in nuclear security could undermine the effectiveness and reliability of America’s nuclear deterrent.

DEI has about as much place in picking nuclear staff as it does a Commander in Chief. Can we just once get someone actually qualified for a senior staff position instead of emptying the clown car?
