President Joe Biden had a peculiar, not to mention injudicious, response to a question about last week's Maui wildfires that have claimed at least 96 lives.
When asked if he had any thoughts about the unfolding disaster from his oceanfront property in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Biden smiled and said, “No comment.”

“After a couple hours on the Rehoboth beach, @potus was asked about the rising death toll in Hawaii,” Bloomberg's Justin Sink posted to X, formerly known as Twitter. He said that the president responded with, “no comment” before he went home. Video later confirmed his account, where Biden paused briefly before responding and getting into his transportation.
Critics responded to Sink's post and hammered the president's response, saying it was “embarrassing.”
MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan, who frequently defends the White House, said Biden's reported response would “hurt him” and called it “unforced errors.”
Another journalist, Yashar Ali, said Biden's response was “absolutely terrible.”
Some estimates suggest that more than 1,000 people remain missing on Maui. Many escaped with little more than the clothes on their backs and still await word on their missing friends and neighbors.

President Biden issued a statement last Wednesday as the scope of the devastation became clear, ordering “all available federal assets” to assist in the island's relief efforts. The U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division has provided a number of its helicopters to extinguish fires with water drops. At the same time, C-17s have transported firefighters and firefighting equipment from the Honolulu Fire Department to Maui. Naval aviation remains on standby to assist with search and rescue. Coast Guard units operating offshore have rescued as many as 40 survivors.
