Jeffries Invokes Scripture In Swipe At Bondi: ‘Vengeance Is Mine, Saith The Lord’

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is drawing attention after quipping that President Donald Trump’s decision to remove Attorney General Pam Bondi from her role at the Department of Justice was an Easter miracle.

Speaking during an interview with former CNN reporter Don Lemon, Jeffries framed Bondi’s exit in spiritual terms, quoting scripture in remarks that quickly sparked reaction across political circles.

“This is Holy Week and vengeance is mine, saith the Lord,” Jeffries said.

He added:

“We put these things in God’s hands, and it tends to work out.”

Jeffries also blasted Bondi’s record — warning she could face legal consequences if Democrats take back power.

Listen, Pam Bondi’s a disgrace. I mean, she violated her oath of office, weaponized the Department of Justice, as you very well know. She deserved it, she should have never been confirmed.

Shame on those Republican senators, but we’re going to hold her and others accountable, particularly in the aftermath of Democrats taking back control of the House in November.

Mediaite reports:

The lawmaker was obviously referring to Lemon facing federal charges for his role in an anti-ICE protest that sabotaged a Minnesota church service earlier this year.

Lemon has said he was merely reporting on the protest, while prosecutors said he actively participated in it; critics have also pointed to footage showing Lemon handing out donuts and coffee to the protesters as a sign he was more than just reporting on the incident. The ex-CNN star pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Jeffries ripped Bondi two days after she was fired by Trump. Trump named Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as acting attorney general right after, but it is unclear if he will keep the position long-term. CBS News reported on Saturday that EPA Administrator and former Republican congressman Lee Zeldin is one of the “front runners” to be the next AG, and the outlet reported Trump is debating making more changes at the DOJ soon.

A Biblical Line With Political Weight

Jeffries’ reference — drawn from Romans 12:19 — is often used to signal that justice should be left to a higher authority rather than pursued through personal retaliation.

But in this case, the timing and context of the remark gave it a more pointed political edge.

By linking Bondi’s removal to a broader idea of divine justice, Jeffries appeared to suggest that events had unfolded in a way that aligned with moral or spiritual accountability — without explicitly stating that outcome as fact.

While some observers interpreted the comment as implying that Bondi’s removal was a form of divine consequence, Jeffries stopped short of making that claim directly, instead leaning on religious language to underscore his criticism.

Jeffries’ Broader Criticism Of Bondi

The Democratic leader did not limit his remarks to scripture.

He delivered a blunt assessment of Bondi’s tenure, calling her:

  • “A disgrace”
  • Someone who “violated her oath of office”

Jeffries made it clear he’s not done with Bondi.

He argued her actions deserve scrutiny and warned accountability could still come, depending on how the political landscape shifts.

It’s part of a broader Democratic message: Trump-aligned figures, they say, crossed the line — and should eventually face consequences.

Why didn’t this scripture quoting Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) say anything when the most corrupt justice department under Joe Biden was running roughshod on anyone they perceived as an enemy?

    Katie

Oh goodie. If democrats take back congress all we can expect is retribution. Every waking hour will be spent trying to convict every republican. Absolutely nothing will be done for the benefit of America. If liberals want this, God help us all.
