The debate over reparations is approaching its climax in a major American city.
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will listen to San Francisco's African American Reparations Advisory Committee Tuesday.
The reparations committee released its draft report in December, coming up with a $5 million per person figure to compensate for centuries of slavery, which was never legal in California, and systemic racism experienced by generations past.
Other benefits include 100% debt forgiveness, tax exemption for Black businesses and annual incomes of $97,000 for the next 250 years.
All for the cost of $1 per family.
Supervisors can vote to adopt all, some or none of the proposals.
Critics, not just conservatives, say the plan would financially ruin the city once known as the “Paris of the West.” And make the idea of reparations, which has gained traction in recent years, politically radioactive at a federal level.
Even before Tuesday's meeting, the city government faces a dire budget deficit, destined to result in painful cuts to vital departments and services. (RELATED: California To End COVID Mask Requirements With One Exception)
Some board members have expressed concerns about the price tag but still want to listen. The board can also vote to modify the reparations committee's recommendations.
Approximately 50,000 African Americans live in San Francisco. It's not immediately clear how many would be eligible for reparations.

The draft reparations proposal was developed by a 15-member San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee, which was established in December 2020 to advise San Francisco's local government and the public on the creation of a citywide reparations plan.
The San Francisco reparations committee mirrors another statewide reparations commission, the California Reparations Task Force, which has similarly proposed measures to remedy the harms caused by the country's history of slavery.
It is still not entirely clear where all of the money for these two proposed reparations plans will come from, a question that could prove to be pivotal considering officials in San Francisco project a $728 million deficit over the next two fiscal years, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. Meanwhile, state level officials project a $22.5 billion deficit for the upcoming fiscal year.

President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Aaron Peskin, has voiced support for the San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee's proposal, insisting to The Chronicle that he hopes it doesn't “just end up gathering dust on a shelf.”

A much better case for discrimination by the government of San Francisco could made for discrimination against Asians. That is an historical fact and these bigots are still trying to discriminate against Asians, specially in admission to the more elite state universities.
