Newspaper Shares Salacious Details In Buried Obama Letter

-

The contents of a redacted letter from 1982 written by a young have made their way to the Post. Now, the paper, one of the largest by circulation, is giving further insight into claims made last week by controversial historian .

In 2017, Garrow wrote “Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama,” – a 1,472-page biography chronicling the former president's meteoric rise. As part of his research, he interviewed the former president for several hours and got some of Obama's ex-girlfriends to send him letters. Last week, Garrow talked about the most surprising thing he found buried deep within the correspondence between Obama and Alex McNear, his girlfriend at Occidental College.

The New York Post explains:

“In regard to homosexuality, I must say that I believe this is an attempt to remove oneself from the present, a refusal perhaps to perpetuate the endless farce of earthly life. You see, I make love to men daily, but in the imagination,” Obama, then 21, wrote to Alex McNear in November 1982.

“My mind is androgynous to a great extent and I hope to make it more so until I can think in terms of people, not women as opposed to men. But, in returning to the body, I see that I have been made a man, and physically in life, I choose to accept that contingency,” he added.

McNear, who dated Obama during his year at Occidental College in Los Angeles, later redacted the salacious paragraphs, which the Pulitzer- Prize-winning historian Garrow hunted down and included in his tome, “Rising Star.”

The letter is currently owned by Emory University, which doesn't permit it to be photographed or removed. Instead, Garrow's friend Harvey Klehr transcribed the paragraphs by hand and sent them to the author.

Klehr provided the Post with a copy of the redacted portion of the letter.

Garrow won the Pulitzer Prize in 1987 but suffered a hit to his reputation for questioning Martin Luther King Jr.'s moral character in 2019 based on a decades-old note in an file, an organization that under J. Edgar Hoover had attempted to destroy the civil rights leader's reputation.

Barack Obama has been married to his wife, Michelle, since 1992. The couple have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.
