After a tumultuous period marked by failed rebranding attempts and a shift toward “woke” progressivism, Playboy magazine is returning to its roots. The 2025 relaunch of the iconic publication signals an effort to reconnect with its original audience. The first issue, released this month, marks a departure from its previous attempts at inclusivity, featuring fully nude centerfolds, traditional models, and a return to content that shaped the magazine’s legacy.
This shift follows years of tumultuous decisions made in the wake of founder Hugh Hefner’s passing in 2017. After his death, Playboy attempted to redefine itself as a progressive brand. The magazine embraced a more diverse approach, featuring celebrities like Lizzo, who is obese, and pop star Halsey, who had a pink buzz cut at the time of her feature, as well as a transgender Playmate, Ines Rau, in a bid to stay relevant in an increasingly politically correct culture. However, these moves were met with mixed reactions, and the magazine’s brand suffered as a result.
In an attempt to distance itself from the objectification of women, the magazine embraced gender fluidity, gender-neutral terminology, and a broader inclusivity agenda. Notably, Playboy moved away from nudity altogether, renaming its iconic “Playboy Bunnies” as “brand ambassadors,” and introduced a slew of controversial cover stars, including openly gay influencers and activists promoting HIV awareness.
In a clear pivot away from these controversial decisions, the relaunch issue of Playboy features Guess model Gillian Nation as the 2025 Playmate of the Year. Nation, a fit, blonde, blue-eyed biological female, is showcased in a fully nude centerfold—an element that was notably absent during the magazine’s “woke” years. The 27-year-old Montana native, known for her love of the outdoors, brings a touch of classic Americana back to the pages of Playboy, marking a stark contrast to the more politically charged messaging of the past.
In her interview, Nation speaks candidly about her love for “masculine” men, her experience growing up as a homeschooled child in rural Montana, and her preference for humor, kindness, and confidence in a partner. This shift to more traditional content aligns with the changing cultural climate, as many Americans have begun to push back against the excesses of identity politics and left-wing ideology.
The magazine’s cover features beauty influencer Lori Harvey, who has been referred to as “America’s hottest nepo baby.” Harvey, the daughter of comedian Steve Harvey, graces the cover in a lingerie shoot, bringing a dose of glamour to Playboy’s revival. The inclusion of an influencer like Harvey signals Playboy’s return to a cultural touchstone for beauty and sensuality.
In addition to these shifts, the new Playboy issue features an article titled “The Rise of the Beta Male,” which explores the phenomenon of effete, low testosterone men plagued by porn addiction and the struggles they face the modern dating scene.
