First Black Republican Woman Elected To Congress Dies At 49

Former Rep. Mia Love (Utah), the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, has passed away. She was 49 years old.

“With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today,” her family said in a post on X. “She was in her home and surrounded by family.”

Love had undergone treatment for brain cancer and was part of an immunotherapy clinical trial at Duke University’s brain tumor center.

Her daughter, Abiagle, shared earlier this month that her mother was no longer responding to the treatment and cancer was progressing. They then shifted focus from treatment to enjoying their remaining time together. (RELATED: Former Republican Congresswoman Mia Love No Longer Responding To Cancer Treatment)

“We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences,” Love’s family said. “We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come.”

Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2022 and at the time was given up to 15 months to live.

She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2014 and served for two terms before narrowly losing her seat in 2018 to Salt Lake City Mayor Ben McAdams (D).
