New Poll Reports Ohio Senate Candidates Separated by Only 1 Point

-

It's anyone's race in Ohio.

With only two weeks until Election Day, Senate candidates J.D. Vance (R) and Rep. Tim Ryan (D) are trying to pull ahead to victory but the latest poll shows it's too close to call.

The latest Marist poll reports the two Senate candidates are only separated by a point in what will be one of the most closely watched races to determine control of the upper chamber.

Marist found Vance garnered the support of 46 percent of registered voters, compared to Ryan's 45 percent, no change from the pollster's September survey. Eight percent were undecided.

The nominees were tied among respondents who indicated they definitely plan to vote at 47 percent support each, according to The Hill.

“This open seat in Ohio has attracted national attention because it is so competitive,” Lee Miringoff, the Marist Institute for Public Opinion's director, said in a statement. “Although both candidates have become more disliked since Marist's poll last month, there are still about one in four voters who have yet to form an opinion.”

The Marist survey found that among independents, Vance and Ryan are also tied at 41 percent and 16 percent of independents indicated they were undecided.

Republicans have been surpised by how competitive the Ohio Senate has has become considering the GOP's success in past election cycles. In 2020, Trump won the Buckeye State by slightly more than eight percentage points and in 2016 he also won the battleground state by more than eight points.

RealClearPolitics has ranked the race as “leans GOP” but Rep. Ryan has managed to make the race interesting by attempting to paint himself as a moderate Democrat and frequently criticizing President and other national Democrats.

“National Democrats have been known not to make very good strategic decisions over the years,” Ryan recently told the Washington Post. “There's a frustration among the rank-and-file Democrats that the leadership doesn't quite understand where we want this party to be.”

“I think getting back on this economic message, building stuff, taking on China, manufacturing clean tech jobs of the future. I think that's where we need to be. If we hit the sweet spot along with Roe v. Wade and a couple of these other things, we can put together another majority,” he said.

Ryan has also attempted to attack Vance over his ties to former President Trump, who endorsed him, but the Republican candidate has laregly gone unscathed throughout the contest.

  1. Anyone’s race, certainly if you’re a Democrat wishing that Vance was not the candidate. Propaganda, Vance is leading in real polls because he has destroyed his opponent in the last debate leaving the man naked and abused about his record of not doing anything while he was in office except vote for every Biden hair brained legislation.

  2. If National Democrats have been known not to make wise decisions, why does Tim Ryan rubber-stamp their every decision? His voting record says that he votes with Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden 100% of the time. Don’t trust what he SAYS. Believe what he DOES, because that’s what you’ll get from him if you vote him into office. “By their fruit ye shall know them” – Another Ohio voter
