Missile Attack Sets Russian Black Sea Fleet Headquarters Ablaze

On Friday, a Ukrainian missile attack inflicted substantial damage on 's headquarters in occupied .

The attacks came one week after Kyiv used British-supplied cruise missiles to strike a landing ship and submarine. The sub, belonging to the 's Kilo-class, may have been a total loss.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claims there are no confirmed casualties due to Friday's attack but adds that one of its servicemen is missing.

Initially silent, Kyiv eventually confirmed it launched the strike that left the installation's HQ smoldering. Ukrainian strikes and commandos had previously disabled some of Russia's mobile air defenses protecting the strategic port.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces' Strategic Communications Department confirmed on Friday that the country “inflicted a successful hit” on the headquarters of Russia's Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol around noon local time.

A Ukrainian military spokesperson commented on the situation in the Black Sea, saying it remains “tense” and that still has “a long way to go” to “destroy all the enemy's capabilities” in Crimea.

Russia is “realizing that it is no longer safe for them in the Black Sea and in their bases,” said Natalia Humeniuk, a spokesperson for the Security and Defense Forces of the South of Ukraine. In a video address, Humeniuk also said that “explosion season” will continue.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksii Danilov warned that the Russian Black Sea Fleet could be “sliced up like a salami” in potential future strikes on Russia's military infrastructure.

Vladimir Putin illegally annexed Crimea in 2014. The Massachusetts-size peninsula connects Russia's Krasnodar region to Southern Ukraine, providing essential logistical support to Russian military assets in that part of the country.
