Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency,” a legally temporary organization which uncovered billions of dollars in wasteful government spending, would become a permanent watchdog under new legislation introduced by a staunch fiscal conservative.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced H.R. 3733, the “Make DOGE Permanent Act” which he states “would give Congress permanent and effective tools to go after waste, fraud, and abuse in our government in real time.”
“DOGE lifted up the hood of federal government spending and put on full display the massive programs and inefficiencies wasting American taxpayer dollars,” said Roy.
“Billions were splurged on waste, fraud, and abuse – but also on programs that clearly do not align with the core values of the American people. Regardless of which party controls the White House, the mission of DOGE in identifying wasteful spending must continue. To ensure that, Congress must have the best tools available to identify this ridiculous spending in real time and allow us to reform government spending well into the future,” Roy added.
According to a statement from Roy, the “Make DOGE Permanent Act” “gives members of Congress the ability to analyze the Treasury payment system for all individual recipients of federal assistance and “allows members of Congress to see invoices in real time for any federal grants larger than $25,000.”
This bill is cosponsored by Reps. Gary Palmer (AL-06), Paul Gosar (AZ-09), Diana Harshbarger (TN-01), Randy Weber (TX-14), Andy Biggs (AZ-05), Scott Perry (PA-10), Eli Crane (AZ-02), Michael Cloud (TX-27), Barry Moore (AL-01), Mary Miller (IL-15), Lauren Boebert (CO-04), Josh Brecheen (OK-02), Tim Burchett (TN-02).
This bill is also supported by the Citizens for Renewing America and Open the Books.
Wade Miller, Executive Director with Citizens for Renewing America said: “Congress needs more tools in it’s arsenal to be an active partner in DOGE efforts and this bill provides the tools to dig deeper into federal expenditures to find woke, waste, fraud, abuse, and inefficiencies.”
John Hart, CEO for Open the Books who helped craft “The Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006” (Coburn-Obama) that created USASpending.gov, which put all federal spending online for the first time said: “One of DOGE’s greatest accomplishments was gaining access to the Treasury Payment System, the administrative state’s Holy of Holies. The Make DOGE Permanent Act will give all taxpayers the ability to see what DOGE sees, and what the federal government is spending. Every taxpayer has the same right to see the government’s account as they do their own personal account. After all, it’s their money. Our founders wrote transparency into the Constitution because they understood that it was essential for freedom’s survival. In fact, transparency precedes the Bill of Rights, the First Amendment and the Freedom of Speech. Transparency is the oxygen in the public square. We can’t speak if we can’t breathe. The Make DOGE Permanent Act breathes new life into our democracy. If our founders had access to today’s technology, they would have written real-time transparency into the Constitution and fought any effort to conceal government spending. Our founders did not view transparency as a two-way street. We have the right to inspect the government’s checkbook. The government does not have the right to inspect our checkbook.”
