Liz Cheney Looks to Unlikely Saviors in MAGA Country

-

first drew the ire of Republicans in her home state after she voted in favor of impeaching former President . That move led to her being censured by both the and the Republican National Committee as a whole.

Since then, Cheney has continued to disappoint her home state's Republican voters.

Although a majority of Republicans first decided to oppose Cheney over her vote to impeach former President Trump — and her subsequent participation in the Jan. 6 committee as its vice chair — she has also strayed from the beliefs of her home state voters on other issues as well.

Late last month, Cheney voted for the “Bipartisan Safer Communities Act” gun control package. Only 14 supported the measure, and a majority of those are either not seeking reelection this year or come from perennial swing districts. There is no reason why Cheney should have voted for the package — coming from a state where Republicans have a four-to-one voter registration advantage — especially when that state gave President Trump his largest win margin in 2020.

Her lead primary opponent, , wasted no time alerting primary voters to Cheney's betrayal.

As Hageman notes in her statement, Cheney's views as the state's only representative in the U.S. House don't align with the values of Wyoming voters.

That point was highlighted by the fact that Wyoming Senator John Barrasso — elected by the same bloc of voters across the state — not only refused to vote for ' egregious gun control package but also introduced his own gun bill with Senator Ted Cruz, working to give his colleagues another way to keep guns out of the hands of criminals without penalizing law-abiding gun owners. When asked about Cheney in a recent interview, Barrasso said “he does not believe there are enough Democrats who might switch over for Cheney to clinch the nomination.”

Recent polling shared by the Casper Star-Tribune showed that Hageman has a 22-point advantage over the incumbent among likely GOP primary voters in the state.

The poll also revealed more damming statistics about Cheney:

“Nearly 60% of Wyoming Republicans who plan to vote in next month's primary say her service on the Jan. 6 committee makes them less likely to vote for her.”

Still, Cheney is betting big on Democrats to save her in the Republican Primary.

Her campaign is reportedly sending mail to Democrats on how to switch parties and vote for her in the primary.

As reported by The New York Times:

“Wyoming Democrats have received mail from Ms. Cheney's campaign with specific instructions on how to change their party affiliation to vote for her. Ms. Cheney's campaign website now has a link to a form for changing parties.”

Earlier this spring, Cheney said “that she will not openly court Democrats by supporting a ‘Democrats for Cheney' group or encourage an existing political action committee, dubbed ‘Switch for Wyoming,' that encourages Democrats to vote in Republican primaries.”

One Democrat who has pledged support for Cheney is a former president of the state's teacher's union, the Wyoming Association, Kathryn Valido. A month ago, Valido told Bloomberg that “she's receiving calls and literature from the Cheney campaign. She's switched parties to vote in primaries before, and says she plans to do so again to vote for Cheney.”

Notably, Cheney has also attracted the support of Democrat donors as well. The New York Times also reported that film producer Jeffrey Katzenberg — a major former backer of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton — has “donated more than $43,000 to her campaign and groups supporting her.”

Cheney presently has a 71% rating with the American Conservative Union, which is lower than her 76.64% Lifetime rating and has declined steadily while she has been in Congress.

Cook Political Report's Dave Wasserman summed up Cheney's chances in the race — and rumors about her political future — in a tweet shared earlier today.

  1. She is asking Democrats to switch and vote for her because she is a __________. Fill in the blank.

    • LIAR! Cheney specifically said that she would NOT ask demokrauts to switch and vote for her. Now she is doing exactly that.

      • Somehow it’s doubtful that her father would be pleased about her actions of becoming a democrat, and a left wing one to boot. Hopefully the good people in her home state will put her out to pasture and send a real republican to congress.

  2. She is not a true Republican in my eyes. She is more a Democrat than anything. Her disliking of Trump shows her true colors.
