Despite claims from the mainstream media Americans would rally in support of abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v Wade and allow states to regulate the practice, a new national poll finds beliefs on abortion have barely budged.
The poll also finds most Americans do not support allowing doctors to mail abortion pills into states that ban abortion, which conflicts with President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance’s vocal support of the pro-abortion practice.
Only 25 percent of Americans tell the new AP-NORC poll they share the political establishment’s belief that abortion should always be legally available. 36 percent report abortion should be illegal in “all” or “most” cases.
Interestingly, the percentage of Americans who say “their state should support abortion for any reason” fell from 61 percent to 52 percent between 2024 and 2025.
But AP-NORC finds an interesting conflict between public opinion and the Trump administration’s stated support for one specific abortion practice.
Only 44 percent of Americans say they support allowing doctors to prescribe and mail abortion pills into states that ban the procedure, a practice that has helped Planned Parenthood perform record high numbers of abortion by using the U.S. Postal Service to skirt state bans.
Despite their pro-life reputation, both President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have stated they support making abortion pills available by mail.
During the 2024 presidential campaign Trump, who vocally opposed state laws banning abortion after a fetal heartbeat and said pro-life states like Florida and Texas “must redo their laws,” defended the Biden administration’s decision to mail abortion pills into pro-life states.
“The Supreme Court just approved the abortion pill and I agree with the decision to have done that,” Trump said in his June 27, 2024 presidential debate with Joe Biden, adding “And I will not block it.” Those comments were overshadowed by Biden’s sleepy, incoherent performance, which forced him from the race.
Upon taking office, the Trump-run Justice Department has continued to defend FDA rules making abortion pills available, fighting in court against a lawsuit by Idaho, Kansas and Missouri to ban the pill.
Trump has also continued the U.S. Postal Service practice of mailing abortion pills into states that ban abortion.
Then-vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance also vowed to support abortion pills, telling NBC’s “Meet The Press” on July 7, 2024 he backed making the drug available.
“Just to be clear. You support mifepristone (the abortion pill) being accessible?,” asked host Kristin Welker.
“Yes, Kristen, I do,” Vance bluntly replied on national television, despite telling pro-life activists he was “100% pro-life.”

Your blog post was a real eye-opener for me. Thank you for challenging my preconceived notions and expanding my worldview.
Ban all abortions except to save a mothers life.
I think the point was that those of us against most abortions don’t want to pay for selfish and uneducated abortions.
Abortions as birth control for one.
NOT in my State may be unfair in the more unfortunate cases, though.
NOT with my taxpayer dollars, ABSOLUTELY fair!
Let the heathen Democrats and RINOs pay for birth control abortions. Strange they support killing American babies, yet believe in Birthright Citizenship.
You can’t make this cr-p up.
