Hunter Biden’s DC Law License Suspended Following Guilty Gun Conviction

Hunter Biden’s license to practice law in Washington, D.C. was officially suspended on Tuesday.

The suspension comes after a jury found the first son guilty on all three felony gun charges earlier this month.

In a terse order, the D.C. Court of Appeals said President Biden’s son is “suspended immediately” from practicing law in the nation’s capital, The Hill reported. It also directed the D.C. Bar’s Board on Professional Responsibility to conduct a formal proceeding to determine “the nature of the offense and whether it involves moral turpitude.”

Under D.C. law, lawyers must be disbarred if convicted of such crimes. Hunter Biden’s license will likely remain suspended until a “final judgment of conviction” has been certified, after which he could lose his law license for good.

Biden faces up to 25 years behind bars, and the president’s son also faces up to $750,000 in fines however legal experts have cast serious doubts that Biden will serve any time behind bars. (RELATED: Hunter Biden Files And Immediately Withdraws Gun Retrial Motion)

On Monday, Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell, requested a new trial citing a procedural matter.

In his motion, Lowell argued that the trial court lacked jurisdiction to proceed with his case because the Third Circuit Court of Appeals had not issued its mandate regarding his pretrial appeals. (RELATED: Hunter Biden Requests New Trial Based On Technicality)

ABC News has more on the longshot bid:

Attorneys for Hunter Biden requested a new trial in court papers filed Monday, arguing that his “convictions should be vacated” because the trial commenced before a circuit court formally issued a mandate denying his appeal — a technical argument disputing not the merits of the case, but a procedural claim.

“Here, no mandate was issued during the trial or even now,” attorneys for Biden wrote. “Consequently, the conviction must be vacated.”

The younger Biden was found guilty earlier this month on two counts of making false statements for saying on a federal form that he was not addicted to drugs at the time he purchased a Colt Cobra 38SPL revolver in October 2018, and a third count of illegally obtaining the firearm while addicted to drugs.

Attorneys for Hunter Biden also argued in a separate filing Monday that the Supreme Court‘s decision this week in U.S. v. Rahimi, which upheld a longstanding federal ban on firearms for people under domestic violence restraining orders, supported their motion for an acquittal or, “at a minimum,” a new trial.

President Biden has publicly stated he does not plan to pardon his son.
