Law enforcement officials have recovered a rifle and obtained clear surveillance footage of the suspect in the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, officials confirmed Thursday morning.
The suspect remains at large and has not been publicly identified.
Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said investigators have “good video footage of this individual,” including CCTV and other sources. However, authorities are withholding the footage for now, citing the need to protect the integrity of the investigation.
The footage could be released to the public if internal efforts to identify the suspect fail. Mason added that the gunman appeared to be a “college-age” male who “blended in well.”

Two individuals who were detained as persons of interest have since been released after questioning.
The New York Times’ Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs reports that investigators have additional evidence that may help identify and locate the killer, including “a palm imprint, a forearm imprint, and a ‘footwear impression.’”
Based on publicly available security footage and dispatch audio, the suspect was reportedly dressed in:
- All-black tactical clothing
- A black tactical helmet
- A mask
- A tactical vest
- Possibly aviator-style sunglasses
The killing has drawn widespread condemnation and is being investigated as a politically motivated act. With political tensions near historic highs, officials are renewing calls to prioritize domestic terrorism and the protection of public figures.
