As Venezuela’s economic and political situation deteriorated under President Nicolás Maduro, Tren de Aragua diversified its criminal activities to include kidnapping, human trafficking, arms smuggling and illegal mining in the Orinoco Mining Arc, a resource-rich area.
The gang’s influence has since spread beyond Venezuela’s borders, with law enforcement agencies now monitoring its presence in multiple countries, including the United States. The Denver metro area has seen an uptick in gang-related violence, with some attributing the escalation to Denver’s status as a “sanctuary city.” Sanctuary policies, which limit local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities, have been a point of contention in the broader immigration debate.
