After a challenging year, facing significant obstacles head-on…
The president of the The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts is stepping down after a turbulent year marked by sweeping leadership changes, political controversy, and cancellations by prominent artists.
Richard Grenell, a longtime Republican foreign policy adviser and ally of President Donald Trump, is expected to leave his role as president of the Trump-Kennedy Center, according to people familiar with the plans.
As The Hill reported, President Donald Trump quickly announced Grenell’s replacement.
President Trump announced in a Truth Social post that Matt Floca, the current vice president of operations, would succeed Grenell as CEO and executive director, pending approval from the Board of Directors.
“Ric Grenell has done an excellent job in helping to coordinate various elements of the Center during the transition period, and I want to thank him for the outstanding work he has done,” Trump wrote.
Grenell’s departure, first reported by Axios, comes at a tumultuous time for the renowned arts and cultural institution, which has seen dramatic changes since Trump took it over early last year and overhauled the board.
The move prompted several artistic partners to end their affiliation with the Kennedy Center, and many artists and performers to cancel or withdraw from planned appearances and shows.
Grenell took the position in early 2025 as part of a major overhaul of the nation’s premier performing arts venue shortly after Trump returned to the White House. The shake-up included the removal of the center’s previous leadership and the installation of a new board made up largely of Trump allies.
Leadership Change Comes Amid Renovation Plans
Grenell’s departure coincides with plans to close the Trump-Kennedy Center for a two-year renovation beginning in July, part of an ambitious redevelopment effort backed by the Trump administration.
The renovation project, funded by Congress with hundreds of millions of dollars, is intended to transform the facility into what Trump has described as a “new and spectacular entertainment complex.”
Year Marked by Controversy and Artist Backlash
Grenell’s tenure drew intense criticism from parts of the arts community following the leadership overhaul and other political changes at the institution.
Numerous performers and cultural organizations canceled appearances at the Trump-Kennedy Center in protest, citing concerns about political interference and changes to programming.
The controversy deepened when Trump placed his name on the building and assumed the role of chairman of the Trump-Kennedy Center’s board.
The upheaval also contributed to staff departures, including executives associated with the National Symphony Orchestra and senior leaders involved in artistic programming.
Historic Institution in a Political Crossfire
The Trump-Kennedy Center, located along the Potomac River in Washington, serves as the nation’s official cultural center and hosts thousands of performances each year, including the annual Kennedy Center Honors.
Traditionally overseen by a bipartisan board, the institution became a flashpoint in national politics after Trump moved to reshape its leadership and cultural direction.
Critics say the changes have damaged the center’s reputation among artists and audiences, while supporters argue the overhaul is necessary to restore what they describe as a more traditional cultural mission.
What Comes Next
Grenell is expected to remain loosely connected to the organization as a consultant after stepping down.
Meanwhile, the Trump-Kennedy Center faces a major transition as it prepares for the extended shutdown and renovation project that could reshape the landmark institution’s future.
Whether the renovations and leadership changes will stabilize the organization — or deepen debate over the role of politics in American cultural institutions — remains unclear.
