New Customs Data Reveals How China is Aiding Russia

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) analyzed Russian customs data showing how the Chinese dragon has stealthily propped up the floundering Russian bear.

Despite an array of sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, Beijing has provided the Kremlin with crucial military technology to sustain its war of aggression.

WSJ explains:

The customs records show Chinese state-owned defense companies shipping navigation equipment, jamming technology and fighter-jet parts to sanctioned Russian government-owned defense companies.

Those are but a handful of tens of thousands of shipments of dual-use goods—products that have both commercial and military applications—that Russia imported following its invasion last year, according to the customs records provided to the Journal by C4ADS, a Washington-based nonprofit that specializes in identifying national-security threats. Most of the dual-use shipments were from China, the records show.

China’s backing for Russia while it wages war on Ukraine was supposed to be on the agenda for discussion during Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s travels to Beijing this weekend. That trip was indefinitely postponed Friday after the Pentagon said that it had tracked a Chinese reconnaissance balloon over the continental U.S. earlier in the week.

It also comes after the United States and Germany agreed to send a small complement of Western tanks to bolster Ukrainian defenses.

While President Biden says the administration won’t send F-16s and F-35s to Kyiv, others aren’t so sure, as American Liberty News’ Paul Crespo recently reported:

As The Washington Post (WP) noted though, Biden’s ‘no’ on F-16s for Ukraine has been met with skepticism in the Pentagon. Team Biden has exhibited a pattern of rejecting similar pleas from Kyiv only to relent later.

Ukraine’s request for fighter jets dates to the start of the war, nearly one year ago, when it had a few dozen Soviet-designed MiG-29 fighters and a smaller number of Russian-built Su-24, Su-25 and Su-27 jets.

Russia methodically targeted Ukrainian air bases and air defense systems in the opening stage of the conflict, but Ukraine has been effectively relocating its warplanes and concealing its air defense assets.

Still, Ukrainian pilots have flown their combat jets sparingly in the face of a complex and deadly array of Russian surface-to-air missiles, jet fighters and other systems. But Ukrainian aircraft have received some significant Western upgrades.

And as noted above, the country has steadily improved its air defense, recently receiving a small batch of much-wanted Patriot air defense systems from the United States, after another Biden flip-flop.
