Four children — including a baby — have been found alive in the Amazon rainforest.
Six weeks after surviving a plane crash in the notoriously hostile ecosystem.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro triumphantly announced the news Friday.
The Wall Street Journal reports:
The president said that the children—siblings ranging in age from 13 years old to one—received medical attention in the small town of San José del Guaviare in southern Colombia and could be transported to Bogotá, the capital.
The ordeal for the children began on May 1 when the engine of the Cessna 206 they were traveling in sputtered and shut off over a swath of virgin jungle known as home to both jaguars and narco-trafficking groups whose members are former Marxist rebels.
Indigenous trackers located the lost plane two weeks later, on May 16, its single engine smashed into the ground and three people dead inside. Authorities identified them as the mother of the children, Magdalena Mucutuy; an indigenous leader, Herman Mendoza, and the pilot, Hernando Murcia.
The children abandoned the plane, leading to an intense search by Colombian authorities, including over 100 soldiers and nearly 100 indigenous trackers, many well-versed in hunting in the region.
The Journal noted that, for the first time in 40 days, relatives of the children could finally breathe a sigh of relief:
“I am so thankful to the soldiers and to our elders, to everyone who participated, I thank them a lot before my God,” María Fátima Valencia, the grandmother of the children, told journalists in San José after news of their rescue became public. “I want to hug my grandchildren, all four of them.”
